Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO HEARD TOO MUCH

By midnight, every door in the Vieri estate had been secured, but Alessandro still couldn't shake the image of a little girl clinging to his lapels.
He found Mia sitting on a velvet sofa in his study, wrapped in a blanket while Nico brought her warm milk. Her eyes kept drifting toward the hallway.
“Where's Mama?” she whispered.
“She's safe,” Alessandro promised. “I'm going to make sure you stay together.”
Mia studied him carefully. “The pretty lady said important men always lie.”
For the first time that evening, Alessandro had no answer.
Chiara arrived after being examined by the estate physician. She had a red mark across her wrist and the exhausted expression of someone who had spent years learning when silence was safer than speech.
“She was speaking to someone called Bellini,” Chiara explained. “She said, ‘Once Alessandro signs the transfer, the Vieri name will belong to us.’ Then she mentioned the wedding.”
“What transfer?”
“I don't know. She was looking at papers on her desk. When she realized I was outside, she called me in and accused me of stealing.”
Alessandro remembered the thick envelope Serena had asked him to review the previous week. She had described it as routine paperwork for the family foundation.
He hadn't signed it.
Yet Serena had insisted the documents were nearly complete.
Nico returned with a report from the security team. Someone had disabled two cameras using an administrator's access code. The same credentials had been used to enter the estate's financial office.
Only four people possessed that code.
Alessandro, Nico, Serena, and his uncle, Vittorio.
His uncle had raised him after his father's death. He had taught Alessandro how to read a room, recognize a lie, and survive a world where trust could be fatal.
Alessandro stared at the access report.
“Where is Vittorio tonight?”
Nico hesitated.
“He left the estate twenty minutes before Serena's phone call.”
Then Mia quietly reached into her pocket and produced a small gold button.
“I found this outside the lady's room,” she said.

Alessandro recognized the engraved symbol immediately.
It belonged to his uncle's favorite coat.
