Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN THEIR FATHER HAD PROTECTED

The second beneficiary was Chiara Rossi.
Not because she was connected to the family by marriage, and not because anyone expected her to become involved with Alessandro. Their father had arranged a small protected fund for the families of employees who died while working for the company's legitimate operations.
Marco had been listed among the intended beneficiaries.
The original records showed that Vittorio had redirected those funds into accounts he controlled, leaving families like Chiara's without the support they had been promised.
Chiara read the documents in silence.
She had spent years working long shifts, stretching every paycheck, and hiding her fear whenever Mia asked why they couldn't afford something the other children had.
Now she discovered that help had been set aside for them all along.
She didn't celebrate.
“Marco should have lived to raise his daughter,” she said. “No amount of money can change that.”
Alessandro agreed.
The legal team began the process of recovering the misappropriated funds and restoring the legitimate beneficiaries' rights. Every claim was reviewed carefully, and the authorities received the original documents along with Henry's testimony and the newly discovered correspondence.
Vittorio was summoned for questioning.
Serena, meanwhile, agreed to cooperate with investigators and provide evidence of the planned transfer. Her actions did not erase her threats against Chiara, but she accepted that she would have to answer for them.
The wedding was officially canceled.
Alessandro returned the ring to its velvet box and placed it in a drawer. He no longer saw it as a promise. It was a reminder of how easily he had mistaken appearances for character.
That evening, he found Chiara in the kitchen preparing soup while Mia sat at the table drawing pictures.
“Would you like to stay here until you feel safe enough to decide what comes next?” he asked.
Chiara looked at him carefully.
“I'll stay because it's safe for Mia. Nothing more.”
“That's all I'm asking.”
Then Mia jumped down from her chair and announced that she had written a letter to her father.
She held it out to Matteo.

At the top, in uneven handwriting, were four words.
Dear Daddy, come home.
