Chapter 8 - The Ghost Walks In

The suffocating silence in the grand boardroom was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.
Senator Marcus Thorne attempted to rally his political authority, slamming his fists onto the mahogany table to establish dominance.
“Dominic Sterling, you are disrupting an official municipal board session with armed federal marshals!” the Senator roared.
“This is an unlawful intimidation tactic! You have zero legal authority to bring armed agents into a state regulatory chamber!”
Dominic did not even look at the Senator; he pulled out the executive chair at the head of the table, gently seating Clara before taking his place beside her.
Clara sat with her spine straight, her hands folded gracefully over the leather portfolio resting on the polished wood.
Her hazel eyes locked directly onto Vivienne’s trembling face, devoid of fear, radiating the untouchable dignity of her bloodline.
“Let’s talk about legal authority, Senator,” Dominic said calmly, leaning forward over the table.
He signaled Leo Rossi, who tapped the master multimedia console, activating the gigantic eighty-foot digital displays spanning the room.
The screens illuminated with the high-definition surveillance footage captured inside The Apex twelve hours prior.
The crystal-clear audio filled the chamber with Vivienne’s frantic, whispering voice speaking to Captain Jackson on her satellite phone:
”The east tunnel is clear. Sweepers in position. Ensure Dominic does not survive the initial breach.”
The thirty board members gasped in collective, horrified revulsion, several commissioners pulling their chairs back from the Thorne delegation in disgust.
Vivienne began to hyperventilate, clutching her throat as her thirty-million-dollar political image was dismantled before the city’s corporate elite.
“That is a fabricated deepfake recording!” Vivienne shrieked, pointing an accusatory manicured finger at Clara.
“You paid this worthless little waitress to doctor those audio files!”
Dominic tapped the terminal again, switching the wall displays to the forensic toxicological analysis of the diamond engagement ring.
The chemical diagrams of concentrated aconitine illuminated the room in bright, condemning red graphics.
“This is the ring you personally placed on my finger last night, Vivienne,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a register of pure, icy venom.
“The micro-injector inside the setting was calibrated to induce a fatal myocardial infarction within forty-eight hours.”
“You didn't just plan an ambush on a highway; you attempted to murder a corporate chairman with biological weapons.”
The heavy double doors swung open once more, and Special Agent Marcus Reed of the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked into the room.

Agent Reed held a stack of red-sealed federal RICO arrest warrants, his gold badge gleaming under the fluorescent lights.
“Vivienne Thorne and Senator Marcus Thorne, under Federal Case 8810, you are officially under arrest,” Agent Reed announced in a booming voice.
“The charges include conspiracy to commit capital murder, federal corporate racketeering, and interstate treason.”
Two federal marshals stepped behind Vivienne, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists with aggressive finality.
Vivienne thrashed against the restraints, screaming curses at Clara as her designer black gown was dragged across the carpeted floor.
“You think you won, you filthy little servant?” Vivienne spat, tears of pure hatred streaming down her face.
“You will always be a nobody from East Boston!”
Clara looked down at the disgraced socialite with calm, unyielding majesty.

“I am not a nobody, Vivienne,” Clara spoke in a clear, resonant voice that silenced the entire chamber.
“I am Clara Montgomery… and you are standing in my father’s house.”
