Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Clara's Father

Dominic signaled Leo to pull the sealed archival ledgers from the subterranean vault beneath the study.

Leo returned within minutes, carrying a yellowed, red-ribboned file bearing the official seal of the Massachusetts Maritime Guild from 2014.

Dominic laid the ancient documents across the coffee table before Clara, pointing at the signature on the first page.

“Ten years ago, my father and Jonathan Montgomery co-authored the sovereign charter for the modern Port of Boston,” Dominic revealed.

“Your father was a brilliant maritime architect who held fifty percent of the deep-water docking rights in Massachusetts.”

Clara’s hands trembled as she traced her father’s elegant cursive signature on the thick parchment.

For a decade, she had lived in shame, believing her father had thrown away their family legacy in illegal underground poker dens.

She had spent her youth scrubbing dishes, hiding from aggressive debt collectors who pounded on her door at midnight.

“Why did everyone say he died because of gambling?” Clara choked out, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes.

“Because Senator Marcus Thorne spent five million dollars bribing the municipal police and the coroner’s office,” Dominic answered with venomous fury.

“Thorne fabricated the gambling debts to force your father into surrendering the deep-water harbor deeds.”

“When Jonathan Montgomery refused to sign the fraudulent transfer, Thorne’s mercenaries cut his brake lines and pushed his car into the harbor.”

“They forged his bankruptcy papers forty-eight hours after his funeral and seized his fifty percent equity for pennies on the dollar.”

Clara buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as the agonizing truth washed away ten years of lies.

Her father hadn't abandoned her; he had been murdered by the very family whose daughter had sat at Table Nine tonight.

Dominic knelt down on the Persian rug in front of her, placing his large, warm hands over her trembling knuckles.

“Look at me, Clara,” he commanded softly.

Clara lifted her tear-stained face, meeting his fierce, unyielding gaze in the firelight.

“Your father died because he stood his ground against monsters,” Dominic spoke, every word vibrating with unbreakable resolve.

“You walked into the lion’s den tonight and saved my life because you carry that same noble blood in your veins.”

“I spent four years trying to find Jonathan Montgomery’s missing legal heir so I could return what was stolen.”

“I didn't know she was carrying silver trays on the fifty-fourth floor of the building built on her father’s land.”

He pulled an unsealed velvet box from his desk drawer, revealing an antique gold signet ring bearing the Montgomery family crest.

“This belonged to your father, Clara.”

“And tomorrow morning, we are going to use it to bring down the entire Thorne dynasty.”
