Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Vault

By eight o'clock that morning, the alpine storm had cleared, leaving the Tahoe mountain peaks glistening beneath a brilliant, golden sun.
Inside the private subterranean security archive, Lucian Moreau sat handcuffed to the metal examination table beside Julian Sterling.
Special Agent Marcus Reed and Assistant United States Attorney Claire Montgomery sat across from them, reviewing stacks of seized satellite files.
The federal task force had arrived via military transport helicopters forty-five minutes after the firefight was concluded.
Prosecutor Montgomery placed an official, red-sealed grand jury indictment on the table directly in front of the two captured conspirators.
“Lucian Moreau and Julian Sterling, your encrypted communications with the Moreau Pharmaceutical Syndicate have been completely decrypted,” Montgomery announced.
“Every wire transfer, every biological contract, and the toxicological proof of Vivienne Vance’s premeditated murder have been authenticated.”
Lucian Moreau lowered his head, sobbing in raw, hopeless defeat as the magnitude of his absolute ruin crushed him.
“I’ll sign the full deposition,” Moreau wept, his hands trembling violently against the iron chains.
“I will give you the private banking passkeys to our fifty-two offshore shell corporations in Liechtenstein and Zurich.”
“I will testify against every governing board member of the Moreau Syndicate in exchange for avoiding the federal death penalty.”
Julian Sterling sat beside him, completely catatonic, staring at the concrete floor as his entire world of stolen wealth and arrogance evaporated into dust.
Detective Marcus Reed stepped forward, taking the signed confessions and sealing them inside an official evidence container.
“The Department of Justice and Interpol have launched simultaneous raids across Geneva, Paris, and London as of twenty minutes ago,” Agent Reed reported.
“The Moreau-Sterling Pharmaceutical Syndicate has been completely dismantled and placed under federal receivership.”
I stood by the heavy blast door with my arms folded across my chest, watching the traitors being processed into federal custody.
The shadow that had hunted my wife for twenty years and poisoned my innocent children had been permanently annihilated beneath the light of justice.
I turned to Matteo, who stood beside me with a proud, respectful nod.

“Have the private jet prepped for a flight to Geneva next month, Matteo,” I said softly.
“We have twelve billion dollars in stolen family trusts to recover for my children.”
