Chapter 5 - The Harvest in the Mountains

At five o'clock in the morning, the heavy titanium blast doors of the clinical surgical suite were sealed under armed guard.

Dr. Julian Sterling stood by the main operating table, checking the specialized marrow extraction cannulas under the sterile lights.

He wore his surgical scrubs, his face calm, professional, and radiating the rehearsed empathy of a sociopath who believed he was untouchable.

The double doors swung open, and I stepped into the operating theater, flanked by Matteo and four armed tactical operators in body armor.

Behind us walked Clara, dressed in a sterile surgical gown, her violet eyes fixed on the physician with cold, unyielding hatred.

Julian looked up, his eyes widening slightly behind his surgical mask as he saw the armed perimeter surrounding the room.

“Roman, what is the meaning of this armed presence inside a positive-pressure sterile field?” Julian asked, adjusting his latex gloves.

“We are preparing for an intensive bilateral stem cell harvest; we cannot risk contaminating the surgical environment.”

I walked slowly toward the operating table, stopping three feet from the physician, my presence towering over him like an executioner at the gallows.

“You won't be performing the harvest today, Julian,” I said, my baritone voice smooth, quiet, and terrifyingly cold.

Julian’s brow furrowed in manufactured confusion, taking an involuntary half-step backward toward the instrument tray.

“Roman, you are under immense emotional stress, but I am the only pediatric hematologist qualified to operate these harvesting systems!”

“If we delay this procedure by even six hours, Caleb and Maya will suffer irreversible multi-organ septic shock!”

From the shadows of the doorway, Dr. Sarah Chen—the Chief of Pediatric Transplantation from Stanford University—stepped forward.

She was accompanied by four independent military trauma surgeons who immediately assumed control of the surgical consoles.

“Your credentials have been permanently suspended by the California Medical Board, Dr. Sterling,” Dr. Chen announced, holding up an unsealed federal warrant.

“And my team will be executing the bone marrow transplantation for the Vance children.”

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color beneath his surgical mask as his gaze darted frantically toward the emergency fire exit.

Before his fingers could move toward his lab coat pocket, Matteo lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s wrist with bone-shattering force.

Matteo wrenched the physician’s arm behind his back, disarming him of a small glass syringe concealed within his sleeve.

Dr. Chen picked up the dropped syringe with sterile forceps, testing the amber fluid on a portable spectrometer.

The digital display beeped twice, flashing bright crimson: CONCENTRATED POTASSIUM CHLORIDE - LETHAL CARDIAC ARREST DOSE.

Julian had prepared a lethal injection to administer directly into Clara’s marrow harvest bag, ensuring the twins would die on the table during the infusion.

I looked at the trembling traitor with eyes colder than the winter ice outside.

“Take him to Sub-Level Three,” I commanded Matteo softly.

“And make sure he stays awake for every second of his surgery.”
