Chapter 14 - The New Dawn in Tahoe

Six months after the federal sentencing, the golden autumn sun rose over the majestic snow-capped peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe.
The mountain estate had been completely transformed into a warm, vibrant family paradise filled with climbing roses, apple orchards, and the sweet scent of cedar.
Down on the private sandy beach bordering the crystal-blue alpine water, Caleb and Maya were building a magnificent sandcastle with their puppy, Apollo.
Both children were laughing happily, their cheeks rosy and their bodies strong and resilient, their cancer permanently erased from their biology.
Caleb carefully placed a small pinecone atop the sand fortress, pretending it was a spacecraft command tower, while Maya decorated the moat with colorful pebbles.
Clara and I walked along the water’s edge, our bare feet sinking into the cool, wet sand as the gentle lake waves washed over our toes.
Clara wore a soft ivory cashmere cardigan and comfortable denim, her hair flowing freely in the crisp mountain breeze.
She looked at me, her violet eyes sparkling with boundless, unshakeable happiness.
“Do you remember the day I stood outside those iron gates in the freezing rain, Roman?” Clara asked with a gentle, nostalgic smile.
I stopped walking, turning to face her as the morning sunlight bathed her beautiful face in radiant gold.
I reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of chestnut hair behind her ear, looking into her eyes with a love that spanned the universe.
“I remember thinking an angel had dropped from the heavens to save my dying soul, Clara,” I replied softly.
“And every single day since, you have proven that love is the only power in this world that never fails.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small velvet box of midnight-blue leather.
I opened the box, revealing a magnificent four-carat violet tanzanite diamond ring set in brushed platinum, mirroring the timeless color of her eyes.
“Clara Hayes, you gave my children their breath, you gave my house its light, and you gave my heart a reason to beat again,” I spoke, my voice thick with raw, heartfelt emotion.
“Will you marry me and rule this family beside me as my wife, my partner, and my equal?”
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Clara’s eyelashes as she pressed her hand against her lips.
“Yes, Roman… a thousand times, yes,” she whispered through her tears.

I slid the platinum ring onto her left finger, pulling her into a fierce, passionate embrace as the mountain wind swirled around us.
The shadows were gone, the graves were at rest, and the dawn of our new life had finally arrived.
