Chapter 6 - The Traitor at the Microscope

Down in the subterranean concrete bunker beneath the east wing, Julian Sterling sat shackled to a heavy iron chair beneath a burning spotlight.

His surgical scrubs were torn, his glasses shattered on the floor, and his hands locked to the metal table with heavy tactical chains.

I pulled a steel chair across the concrete, sitting down directly in front of him without uttering a single word.

On the table between us, I laid Vivienne’s silver cassette tape, the toxicological reports, and the unredacted Swiss banking ledgers.

Julian spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, glaring at me with the desperate, cornered malice of a defeated viper.

“You think you’re so smart, Roman!” Julian snarled, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, manic sneer.

“You built an empire of guns and concrete, but you were too stupid to see what was in your wife’s teacup every single morning!”

I did not flinch, nor did I raise my voice; I leaned forward, looking directly into his dilated, cowardly pupils.

“Why did you do it, Julian?” I asked softly.

“My family gave you an empire, gave you billions in research funding, and treated you like a brother for ten years.”

“Your family stole the Moreau-Sterling patents twenty-six years ago!” Julian shrieked, thrashing violently against the steel chains.

“Those patents were worth twelve billion dollars in European sovereign healthcare contracts!”

“Vivienne escaped with the sovereign encryption keys, and our board spent twenty years hunting her across three continents!”

“When she married you, she thought she was safe behind your mafia army!”

“So I spent eighteen months feeding her digitalis drops in her morning vitamins until her heart gave out!”

“And I spent the last six months ensuring Caleb and Maya’s marrow slowly turned to water so the entire twelve billion would default to my father’s trust!”

I reached into my pocket, pulling out a small glass dropper bottle labeled with his private pharmaceutical seal.

I unscrewed the cap, letting three clear drops of the synthetic digitalis fall onto the back of his trembling, shackled hand.

Julian gasped in raw, paralyzing terror, his breath hitching in his throat as the reality of his own poison touched his skin.

“Roman… please… I gave you the antidote formula in my laptop safe!” Julian wept pathetically, pressing his forehead against the metal table.

“I will sign over the entire twelve-billion-dollar Swiss holding company! Just don't let me die in the dark!”

I stood up slowly, looking down at the monster who had murdered my wife and tortured my children.

“You aren't dying today, Julian,” I whispered into his ear with chilling finality.

May you like

“You are going to spend the next forty years in a federal maximum-security cell, watching my children rule the empire you tried to steal.”

I signaled the guards at the door and walked out of the bunker, leaving the traitor screaming into the cold, windowless darkness.
