Chapter 38 - Mentors and Monarchs

By the time autumn arrived in Chicago, Rowan Forensic Consulting had expanded beyond my initial expectations. I purchased the entire floor of a mid-rise historical building downtown, transforming it into a state-of-the-art financial investigation firm.
I made a conscious, deliberate choice regarding my hiring strategy.
I recruited six brilliant, highly talented young female accountants and data analysts who had been overlooked, underpaid, or pushed out of traditional corporate firms. Two of them were survivors of domestic hardship, women who knew firsthand what it felt like to rebuild a life from scratch.
"Welcome to the firm, ladies," I said during our first team meeting around a massive glass conference table overlooking the city park.
"We don't do quiet work here," I told them, looking at each of their eager, intelligent faces.
"We take cases that matter. We audit corporations that think they are above the law, and we protect clients who have been exploited by financial abusers."
A young analyst named Maya raised her hand, a nervous but excited smile on her face.
"Ms. Rowan, what is our firm's core philosophy?"
I stood up, walked over to the whiteboard, and wrote three simple words in bold black ink:
Precision. Truth. Courage.
"We are not here to negotiate with bullies, Maya," I said, turning back to face them.

"We are here to lay out facts so undeniable that the bullies have no choice but to surrender. Now, let's get to work."
Seeing those young women smile with newfound confidence gave me a deeper sense of fulfillment than any corporate retainer fee ever could. I wasn't just surviving anymore; I was building an institution that would empower women for generations to come.
