Chapter 10 - The Arrogant Call

|

I sat in the quiet safety of Rachel’s conference room, drinking hot tea while her paralegals filed the massive stack of emergency paperwork with the county courthouse.

At exactly noon, my phone buzzed on the mahogany table. The screen displayed a blocked caller ID, but I knew exactly who it was. I immediately opened my secondary recording application, ensured it was actively capturing audio, and answered the call on speakerphone.

"Hello?" I said softly, injecting just enough vulnerability into my voice to feed his massive ego.

"You completely embarrassed yourself last night, Claire," Owen’s voice drifted through the speaker, dripping with condescension and arrogant authority. "Running away in the middle of the night like a hysterical child. Dana is just a colleague helping me navigate a highly stressful, multi-million dollar corporate deal. You completely overreacted."

I looked at my heavily splinted, broken finger resting on the table.

"Did your colleague help you change the deadbolts on my front door at four in the morning, Owen?" I asked, my voice remaining entirely flat.

He laughed, a short, cruel bark that made my skin crawl. "Don't be dramatic. This is my house too. You needed time to cool off, and I needed to secure my property."

"No, Owen," I replied firmly. "It is not your house. It never was."

He laughed again, louder this time, reveling in his perceived dominance. "You really want to play hardball? I’ve already spoken to a top-tier divorce lawyer this morning, Claire. You’re going to be left with nothing."

There was a brief rustling sound on the line, and then a new, sharply melodic voice took over the receiver.

"You should really just accept whatever generous settlement he offers you, Claire," Dana Vale whispered into the phone, her tone dripping with malicious superiority. "Women like you, plain and predictable, don’t recover very well from massive public humiliation. Just walk away quietly."

I didn't scream. I didn't curse at her. I simply reached out and tapped the red button to end the call, immediately saving the digital recording to my secure, encrypted evidence file.

Their overwhelming, blinding confidence had made them incredibly careless. They were handing me the rope they would eventually hang from.
