Chapter 27 - The Gala Confrontation

|

The annual Chicago Corporate Leadership Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across hundreds of women in designer gowns and men in crisp tuxedos.

I arrived wearing a sleek, emerald-green floor-length gown that showed off my posture, my hair pinned back up in an elegant chignon. Around my neck was a simple, delicate gold chain—no diamonds, no dramatic jewels. I didn't need shiny trinkets to command respect in that room.

As I walked through the double doors, several heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd. I was no longer "Owen Sterling's quiet wife"; I was the elite forensic auditor who had sent shockwaves through the financial district.

"Clara Rowan," a deep, resonant voice called out from behind me.

I turned calmly. Standing there was Julian Vance himself. He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a predatory smile, and eyes as cold as arctic ice. He held a crystal glass of scotch in one hand.

"Mr. Vance," I said, offering a polite, icy nod. "A lovely evening."

"I was surprised to see your name on the guest list," Julian said, stepping closer until he was barely two feet away. His tone was smooth, but his eyes held a sharp, veiled threat.

"I assumed a woman who recently went through such a... traumatic personal ordeal would prefer to stay out of the public eye."

"On the contrary, Mr. Vance," I replied, my voice carrying clearly over the soft chamber music playing in the background.

"I find that light is the best disinfectant. Secrets thrive in the dark, but in the light, things tend to fall apart very quickly."

Julian’s smile tightened slightly, his jaw clenching.

"Owen was an incompetent fool," Julian whispered leaning in slightly.

"He lacked discipline. He thought he could play in the deep end of the pool without learning how to swim. I hope you aren't making the same mistake, Clara."

I looked directly into his eyes, feeling absolutely zero fear.

"Owen was a coward, Julian," I said, intentionally dropping his formal title.

"And you are an accountant's dream. Enjoy your scotch. Account 904 in Zurich is looking particularly interesting this evening."

Julian’s face went completely pale. The glass in his hand trembled just enough to send a ripple across the amber liquid. Without another word, I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving him standing alone beneath the sparkling chandeliers.
