Chapter 15 - The Trap is Set

|

Halcyon Medical’s corporate headquarters was an intimidating fortress of glass and steel towering over downtown Chicago. When I arrived on Monday morning, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit that carefully concealed the deep bruising on my thigh, the receptionist immediately escorted me to the executive floor.

The boardroom was massive, bathed in cold, harsh morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Seven incredibly stern members of the Board of Directors sat around a massive mahogany table. Naomi Price sat near the head, motioning for me to take the empty leather chair directly beside her.

At exactly 9:00 a.m., the heavy double doors swung open.

Owen strolled into the boardroom radiating a sickening, unearned swagger. He was dressed in his most expensive Italian suit, his hair perfectly styled. Dana Vale walked closely behind him, clutching a designer briefcase, followed by a slick, expensive-looking labor attorney Owen had hired over the weekend.

Owen smiled confidently at the board members, completely ready to deliver his charismatic, rehearsed defense.

Then, he stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes landed on me, sitting quietly beside the Director of Compliance. The arrogant swagger vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine, confused panic. He had expected to fight a bunch of corporate lawyers; he had absolutely not expected the victim of his assault to be sitting at the head of the table.

"What is she doing here?" Owen demanded, his voice cracking slightly as he turned to his labor attorney. "This is a confidential corporate meeting! My wife has absolutely no right to be in this room."

"Please take a seat, Mr. Mercer," the Chairman of the Board instructed, his voice completely devoid of warmth.

Owen reluctantly pulled out a chair, glaring daggers at me across the polished mahogany. Dana sat beside him, her cruel smile entirely gone, replaced by a nervous, darting energy.

"Let's get this over with," Owen said, trying to regain control of the narrative. "My estranged wife discovered an affair on Thursday night. Now, she is vindictively weaponizing private, stolen material to embarrass me and derail a crucial corporate contract. It's pathetic, really."

Naomi Price calmly stood up and dimmed the overhead lights.

"Let's review this 'private material,' shall we?" Naomi said, turning on the massive digital projector.
