Chapter 37 - Reclaiming the Spotlight

|

When I walked down the marble steps of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, a wall of reporters and camera crews surged forward behind the security barricades. Microphones were thrust toward my face, flashes popping in a blinding rhythm.

"Ms. Rowan! Over here!"

"Clara! How do you feel about the verdict?"

"Do you have a message for other women trapped in abusive situations?"

I stopped at the bottom step, adjusting the lapel of my navy jacket. Frank stood a few feet away, ensuring the crowd kept a respectful distance, but I didn't need a shield today. I raised my hand slightly, and the noisy press corps instantly fell quiet.

"Five years ago," I said, my voice steady, clear, and carrying across the plaza,

"I was told that my voice didn't matter. I was told that if I stood up against corruption and cruelty, I would lose everything."

The cameras clicked frantically, capturing every word.

"Today, twelve ordinary citizens proved that no amount of wealth, status, or intimidation can hide the truth forever," I continued.

"To any woman standing in the dark right now, feeling small and afraid: do not let them convince you that you are helpless. Build your foundation, gather your facts, and step into the light. The light belongs to you."

Without taking further questions, I offered the reporters a small, serene smile, turned toward the street, and stepped into the waiting sedan Frank had arranged.

As the car pulled away from the curb, I looked out the back window at the fading silhouette of the courthouse. The chapter of my life defined by Owen Sterling was officially closed, locked, and buried under a mountain of federal conviction papers.
