Chapter 28 - A Desperate Deal

|
The morning after the gala, my phone rang at seven sharp. It was Agent Lin.
"Clara, you need to hear this," Lin said, her tone urgent.
"Owen just requested an emergency meeting with the federal prosecutor from his holding cell."
I took a quiet breath, pouring myself a fresh cup of coffee.
"What does he want?"
"He realized the net is tightening around Vance Global," Lin explained.
"He's terrified Vance is going to have him eliminated inside the correctional facility. So, he’s offering to testify against Vance in exchange for a reduced sentence and protective custody."
"And what is his condition?" I asked, knowing the answer before she even spoke it.
"He wants full immunity from the embezzlement charges related to your personal accounts," Lin said softly.
"He’s claiming you were an active co-conspirator who managed the offshore transfers while acting as his spouse."
A bitter, quiet laugh escaped my lips. Even behind bars, stripped of his suits, his money, and his status, Owen was still trying to blame me for his own destruction.
"Let him speak to the prosecutor, Agent Lin," I said calmly.
"Wait, you aren't worried?" Lin asked, surprised.
"Not at all," I replied, standing up and looking out at my bright, beautiful office.
"Owen is lying, and lies require memory. I have bank statements, digital timestamps, IP addresses, and sworn affidavits. Let him lie under oath to a federal prosecutor. It will just add perjury to his indictment."
"You really don't hold back anymore, do you?" Lin chuckled softly.

"I held back for five years while I was married to him, Agent," I said, setting my coffee cup down.
"I'm done holding back."
