Chapter 8 - THE LEDGER UNDER THE TABLE

The ledger contained Victor’s payments.
Not everything.
Enough.
BrightStar kickbacks.
Private consulting fees.
Transfers through Vale Development.
Then recent entries.
Caleb Raines.
Five payments over eleven months.
Total:
$310,000.
Caleb’s salary did not explain them.
Victor had been paying him separately.
For what?
The video answered.
Rose appeared on screen.
Thinner.
Cancer already visible.
“Mara, I’m sorry.”
Again.
Mara sighed.
Even from grave, Rose began badly.
“I arranged this dinner because I ran out of time.”
Mara cried.
Rose explained she contacted Dante after diagnosis.
She knew Adrien ate at Ferrante’s privately.
She knew he was alone.
But romance was not her primary plan.
That annoyed Mara.
“Of course not.”
Rose wanted Adrien and Mara in same room because neither could safely examine Victor alone without appearing to attack him for personal gain.
Mara had standing through trust.
Adrien had authority within Moretti companies.
Together, independent evidence might survive family suppression.
Manipulative?
Yes.
Smart?
Also yes.
Then Rose said:
“If you hate me for arranging your love life, fair.”
Adrien actually smiled.
Mara did not.
Yet.
Then:
“Do not marry the man because I liked his mother.”
Mara laughed through tears.
“Thank you.”
Rose continued:
“Do not date him because his daughters—”
She stopped and corrected.
“Your daughters like him.”
Interesting.
Rose did not know whether date would happen after all.
Then the real secret.
Caleb did not abandon Mara solely because of pregnancy.
He had already been under investigation at Hawthorne for accessing restricted trust files.
When Mara told him she might be pregnant, he realized the unborn child could become beneficiary.
If he stayed, his access could look suspicious.
So he left.
Not because he did not want children?
Partly perhaps.
But also self-preservation.
Then, after triplets were born, he learned there were three beneficiaries.
More money.
Rose discovered.
Forced child support.
Watched him.
Then Victor recruited him after Rose got sick.
Why?
Because Caleb knew trust architecture.
They planned to challenge Rose’s amendments after her death and move administration to a friendly fiduciary firm.
Then potentially borrow against assets through “family investments.”
Legal-looking extraction.
Not simply steal.
More sophisticated.
Mara felt sick.
Then Rose’s video ended:
“Adrien, if you’re watching, your mother was right about you.”
Adrien went still.
“You are not your uncle.”
Pause.
“But you have his habit of deciding first and explaining later.”
Mara looked at him.
He sighed.
Even dead women were coordinating against him.
Final line:
“If Mara tells you no, believe her the first time.”
Mara smiled.
Adrien muttered:
“I feel targeted.”
Then Nina called.
Caleb had amended visitation petition.
He now requested immediate temporary visitation based on alleged parental alienation.
Attached evidence:
Photographs of Adrien with the triplets.
May you like
Caleb intended to portray Mara as exposing children to a dangerous criminal while denying access to their biological father.
The date that began everything had just become a weapon in court.
