Chapter 7 - THE BAKERY LOAN

Mara did not ask Adrien to pay off the loan.

He offered exactly once.

“No.”

He nodded.

Then asked:

“What would help?”

Better.

“Find me a commercial lender who has never done business with your family.”

He did.

Three introductions.

Mara chose one independently.

Refinancing would take time.

Meanwhile Victor’s company claimed right to inspect financial records under loan terms.

Her attorney reviewed.

Some access legitimate.

Not unlimited.

Mara complied precisely.

No panic.

Then Victor arrived at Bennett & Bloom.

Alone.

Sixty-one.

Silver hair.

Perfect coat.

Smile like a banker.

“Mara Bennett.”

She did not invite him behind counter.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“Victor.”

“No.”

His smile thinned.

Good.

He ordered espresso.

Sat.

Then:

“Adrien is making this larger than necessary.”

Mara placed cup down.

“I’m not Adrien.”

“No.”

Victor studied her.

“That is becoming inconvenient.”

There.

Honest enough.

He suggested settlement.

Caleb withdraws visitation petition.

Victor releases bakery loan.

Trust dispute disappears.

In exchange, Mara signs confidentiality and agrees to restructure girls’ trust under a new administrator.

Chosen by Victor.

She laughed.

“No.”

“You should read it.”

“I will.”

“But no.”

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“Your bakery has debt.”

“Yes.”

“Three children.”

“Yes.”

“Thin margins.”

“Also yes.”

“You’re remarkably calm.”

“My mother raised me.”

That unsettled him.

Then Victor said:

“Rose was not always honest with you.”

“I’ve discovered.”

“She manipulated Adrien into this date.”

“Apparently.”

“She manipulated Caleb.”

“Maybe.”

“She manipulated Isabella.”

Mara leaned forward.

“And yet everyone keeps producing documents that show you took kickbacks.”

His smile disappeared.

Good.

Then:

“Careful.”

Mara’s entire body chilled.

Not loud.

Not explicit.

But threat.

Her phone recorded because her attorney had advised recording business meetings where lawful with proper setup? Massachusetts is all-party consent state—careful! Can't secretly record. Better bakery security video without audio? We can say visible security cameras record video only. No illicit recording. She had Nina present via conference? Hmm. Let's avoid recording.

Mara replied:

“I am.”

Victor left.

Then Sophie appeared from kitchen.

She had been coloring in office with babysitter.

“Was that Adrien’s bad uncle?”

Mara nearly laughed.

“Yes.”

Sophie handed her pink notebook.

“I found Grandma’s secret page.”

“What?”

Behind the interview scoring sheet was a folded map.

Rose’s handwriting.

A hand-drawn diagram of Ferrante’s.

One table circled.

Adrien’s table.

Under it:

ASK DANTE FOR THE KEY.

Mara called Adrien.

Dante went silent when shown photo.

Then reached into his wallet.

Removed a tiny brass key he had carried for eleven years.

“Rose gave me this.”

“What does it open?”

Dante looked toward Ferrante’s private dining room.

“I never knew.”

Beneath Adrien’s original table was a locked floor compartment.

Inside:

A ledger.

May you like

And a sealed video drive.

Rose had hidden evidence beneath the exact table where she arranged Mara and Adrien’s first date.
