Chapter 13 - THE NOTEBOOK SCORE

Adrien never saw his score until the triplets turned seven.

They brought the pink notebook to Mara’s apartment.

He and Mara had been dating again for nine months.

Slow.

Separate homes.

No financial dependence.

No moving in.

The girls considered this inefficient.

Lily announced:

“We need final interview.”

Adrien sat at kitchen table.

Mara poured wine.

“No helping.”

“I’m terrified.”

Sophie opened notebook.

Original questions.

Cooking:

Partial.

Children:

Improved.

Snoring:

Unknown.

Job:

“Complicated.”

Adrien sighed.

Then Emma turned page.

“Important question.”

He knew.

“If you like Mommy, will you leave?”

This time he had an answer.

“I may have to travel.”

“Work may change.”

“I cannot promise I will never make a mistake.”

The girls listened.

“But I will not disappear because things become difficult.”

Pause.

“If your mother asks me to leave, I will respect her.”

Mara’s eyes filled.

“And if she asks me to stay, I will work very hard to deserve that.”

Sophie wrote.

Then Lily asked:

“Do you want to be our daddy?”

Silence.

Mara stopped breathing.

Adrien answered carefully.

“You already have a father.”

Good.

“He made mistakes, but that relationship belongs to you.”

Then:

“I want to be Adrien.”

Emma frowned.

“That’s not family.”

“It can be.”

“How?”

“Family has more than one job.”

Mara smiled.

Then Lily whispered with sisters.

Final score.

She slid notebook.

Adrien stared.

“Out of?”

“100.”

He looked offended.

“What lost sixteen points?”

“Lying.”

Fair.

“Cooking.”

Fair.

“Scary face.”

Unfair.

Mara laughed.

Then Sophie added:

“You can earn more.”

Adrien looked at Mara.

“Apparently I’m on probation.”

“You are.”

Then Caleb returned from custody months later.

Family court arranged supervised contact again.

He was different?

Maybe quieter.

Still flawed.

He got a regular accounting job under restrictions.

Paid support.

Visited monthly.

Girls slowly built limited relationship.

Mara did not force affection.

Adrien did not compete.

That mattered.

Then one day Caleb told Adrien privately:

“Thank you for not replacing me.”

Adrien answered:

“I couldn’t.”

Caleb nodded.

“You could’ve tried.”

That was true.

Then Caleb handed him something.

Rose’s last sealed note.

Addressed:

TO THE MAN WHO STAYS.

Adrien stared.

“How did you get this?”

“Rose gave it to me years ago.”

“Why?”

“She said I’d know whether it belonged to me.”

Caleb smiled sadly.

“It doesn’t.”

Adrien brought it to Mara unopened.

Her choice.

Inside Rose wrote:

If you are reading this, congratulations.

The girls probably interrogated you into submission.

Mara laughed.

Then:

Do not become their father because you love their mother.

Become trustworthy enough that they decide what to call you.

May you like

Adrien closed his eyes.

Rose had one final lesson.
