Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FOR MONEY

Caleb had not returned for his daughters.

That became clear quickly.

He had returned for the trust.

Mara met with an independent attorney named Nina Alvarez.

Not Adrien’s lawyer.

Mara insisted.

Nina obtained trust access records.

Five attempts in eleven months.

One requested:

Beneficiary address.

Custodial rights.

Emergency parent authorization.

Caleb had claimed Mara was financially unstable.

That almost made her laugh.

She owned Bennett & Bloom outright.

Small.

Profitable.

No unpaid taxes.

No bankruptcy.

But she was a single mother.

Caleb apparently thought that label could become evidence.

Then Nina found a draft petition.

Never filed.

Caleb intended to seek visitation.

Not custody.

Why?

Once recognized as active parent, he might gain standing to challenge certain financial restrictions around the girls’ trust.

Still not automatic control.

But leverage.

Mara’s stomach turned.

“He doesn’t want them.”

Nina answered carefully.

“We know he has shown no parenting history.”

That mattered.

No melodrama.

Evidence.

Then Adrien called.

“May I come to your bakery?”

The wording surprised her.

“Why?”

“I found something.”

“Bring Dante.”

“Why Dante?”

“I’m not meeting a mafia boss alone after closing.”

Fair.

They arrived at nine.

The bakery smelled like vanilla and butter.

Adrien looked strangely out of place beside pink cake boxes.

The triplets were upstairs with Mara’s neighbor.

Adrien placed an employment file on the counter.

Caleb Raines.

Current salary.

Bonuses.

Corporate access.

Then:

“He was hired by Victor.”

Mara read.

“Why?”

“His résumé is good.”

“Is it real?”

“Mostly.”

Then Adrien showed her one line.

Previous employer:

Hawthorne Fiduciary Services.

Mara froze.

“That’s the trust administrator.”

“Yes.”

Caleb had worked there before disappearing from her life.

He may have learned about the trust from inside.

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

Before Mara became pregnant.

Meaning when Caleb dated her, he already worked at the firm connected to Rose’s hidden fund.

Mara felt nauseated.

“You think he dated me because of this?”

“I don’t know.”

Good answer.

No premature conclusion.

Then Adrien showed another document.

Caleb accessed an archived account linked to Rose Bennett twelve times during the year he dated Mara.

He knew who her mother was.

He knew about the Moretti connection.

Possibly before Mara knew he existed.

Then the bakery door rattled.

Locked.

A man stood outside.

Mara’s heart stopped.

Caleb.

Five years older.

Same face.

Same expensive smile.

He held a wrapped gift.

Three identical pink boxes.

Adrien moved.

Mara put a hand up.

“No.”

He stopped.

She walked to the door but did not unlock it.

Caleb smiled through glass.

“Hi, Mara.”

Her body remembered loving him.

That angered her.

“What do you want?”

“To meet my daughters.”

“After five years?”

His smile disappeared.

“I made mistakes.”

“Leave.”

Then he raised the boxes.

“I brought presents.”

Mara looked at them.

Each label carried a name.

Lily.

Sophie.

Emma.

He knew which girl was which.

How?

He had never met them.

Then Mara noticed something else.

Tucked beneath Lily’s ribbon was a recent photograph.

Caleb had been watching them.
