Chapter 5 - THE PHOTOGRAPHS

Mara called police.
Not Adrien’s men.
Adrien respected it.
Caleb left before officers arrived.
The photograph remained outside the door.
Evidence.
School notified.
Pickup restrictions tightened.
Mara hated every second of it.
Then Caleb’s attorney contacted Nina.
He claimed the photograph came from a licensed investigator preparing for legitimate paternity and visitation proceedings.
Technically possible.
Morally awful.
But not automatically criminal.
The pink boxes contained books.
No tracker.
No weapon.
Just gifts.
That almost made it worse.
He wanted to look normal on paper.
Then Caleb filed for visitation.
Mara expected rage.
Instead she felt focused.
Five years of absence.
Zero child support.
No calls.
No birthday cards.
No hospital visit.
Evidence.
Then a shocking fact surfaced:
Child support had been paid.
Not to Mara.
A payroll deduction from Caleb’s wages had sent $1,200 monthly for almost three years.
Recipient:
BENNETT FAMILY CUSTODIAL.
Mara had never seen it.
Total approximately $43,000.
Where did it go?
Account opened by Rose.
Mara’s mother.
She stared.
Rose had accepted Caleb’s payments secretly.
Why?
Nina obtained statements.
The money remained untouched.
Rose never spent it.
She placed it into education savings for the girls.
Maybe she believed Mara would refuse it out of anger.
Another decision made for her.
Mara loved her mother.
And wanted to scream at her.
Then Caleb’s lawyer argued:
“He has financially supported his children.”
Technically.
Secretly.
But why secretly?
Because Rose demanded it.
Emails showed Rose contacted Caleb two years after birth.
Not to reconcile.
To force responsibility.
She had discovered his employment.
Threatened legal action.
Caleb agreed to payments if Mara was not told.
Why hide?
His answer:
“I wasn’t ready to be a father.”
Cowardice.
But he paid.
That complicated the clean villain story.
Then another email from Rose:
Your money does not purchase access.
Good.
Then Caleb:
I don’t want access.
Only confirmation the trust remains intact.
There.
Money again.
He cared about trust.
Then his attorney presented another claim:
The girls’ trust was created using funds unlawfully diverted from Moretti companies.
If true, Caleb argued the trust might be invalid.
Why would a father challenge money intended for his daughters?
Unless he wanted leverage against someone else.
Adrien.
Then Mara received an anonymous email.
Attachment:
An old photograph.
Rose Bennett standing beside Isabella Moretti.
And behind them:
Victor Moretti.
Caption handwritten:
THEY STOLE IT FIRST.
Mara looked at Adrien.
“Did your family steal the trust money?”
He stared at photograph.
Then whispered:
May you like
“I don’t know.”
And for once, the feared man looked genuinely afraid of what his own family records might say.
