Chapter 14 - WHAT THE GIRLS CALLED HIM

Mara and Adrien moved in together two years later.
Not into Moretti mansion.
No.
They bought a house together.
Half hers.
Half his.
Separate counsel.
Clear agreement.
The triplets selected rooms.
Emma chose smallest because it had window seat.
Sophie wanted desk.
Lily wanted closet.
Priorities.
Adrien sold several old properties.
Retained legitimate businesses under independent management.
No empire throne.
Still wealthy.
Still feared by some.
Less useful to him now.
Then one ordinary Tuesday, Sophie fell from monkey bars.
Broken wrist.
Mara was across town at catering event.
School called first emergency contact.
Mara.
Second:
Adrien.
Third:
Caleb.
Adrien arrived at hospital.
Did not authorize anything beyond what emergency contact allowed.
Called Mara.
Stayed with Sophie.
She cried.
He held her hand.
Then she whispered:
“Dad?”
Adrien froze.
Sophie froze too.
Neither moved.
Then she said:
“I mean Adrien.”
His chest nearly broke.
“It’s okay.”
When Mara arrived, Sophie told her immediately.
“I accidentally called Adrien Dad.”
Mara crouched.
“How did that feel?”
Sophie thought.
“Not bad.”
Good.
No adult celebrated too loudly.
Then months passed.
Lily tried “Dad” once.
Stopped.
Preferred Adrien.
Emma never used it.
For another year.
That was fine.
Caleb remained Dad too.
Different relationship.
Families can hold complexity.
Then Adrien proposed.
Not restaurant.
Triplets banned public proposals.
He asked Mara in their kitchen.
Girls spying from hallway badly.
“Mara Bennett.”
“Yes?”
“I’ve rehearsed this fourteen times.”
She laughed.
“I believe you.”
He held ring.
“I love you.”
“I love your daughters.”
“I respect that Caleb is their biological father.”
“I respect that your business is yours.”
“I respect that this house is ours.”
“And I know marriage is not permission to manage you.”
Mara smiled.
“Good beginning.”
Then:
“Will you marry me?”
Three whispers erupted in hallway.
“Say yes!”
Mara laughed.
Then looked at Adrien.
“Yes.”
Girls screamed.
Emma ran first.
Wrapped arms around him.
Then whispered into his jacket:
“Dad.”
This time she did not correct herself.
Adrien cried.
Quietly.
May you like
Mara pretended not to notice for approximately three seconds.
Then kissed him.
