Chapter 12 - THE SECOND FIRST DATE

Six months passed.

Bennett & Bloom refinanced its loan independently.

No Victor.

No Moretti.

Mara expanded catering.

Triplets turned six.

Caleb entered a plea agreement.

Twelve months incarceration followed by supervised reentry conditions and continued family-court oversight.

He told girls before reporting.

“I did something wrong.”

Emma asked:

“Did you hurt Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hit her?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“I tried to use money to make her do what I wanted.”

Lily frowned.

“That’s mean.”

“Yes.”

Simple.

He did not ask forgiveness.

Good.

Then Adrien’s legal situation settled.

Financial charges tied to old operations.

Plea.

Eighteen months.

Mara heard from news first.

He called afterward.

“I wanted you to hear from me, but counsel—”

“It’s fine.”

Silence.

Then:

“I’ll surrender next month.”

“Okay.”

“Can I see the girls?”

Mara considered.

He had become important to them.

Not father.

But person.

“Yes.”

Dinner.

At bakery.

Public enough.

The girls brought notebook.

Adrien looked nervous.

Lily opened.

“You lost points.”

“I assumed.”

“For lying.”

“Yes.”

“Mommy says you told truth later.”

“Yes.”

Sophie made small mark.

Then Emma asked:

“Will you come back?”

Adrien froze.

The same question from first night.

Now real.

He looked at Mara.

Then girls.

“I am going away because I made choices I have to answer for.”

Good.

“I plan to come back.”

“Plan?”

Emma disliked uncertainty.

Adrien nodded.

“I won’t promise what I can’t control.”

Better.

“But if I am allowed to be in your lives when I return, I will show up.”

Lily closed notebook.

“Okay.”

Then Mara walked him outside.

He said:

“I’m not asking you to wait.”

“Good.”

“I love you.”

She closed eyes.

There it was.

“I love your daughters.”

Her throat tightened.

“And I know that does not make them mine.”

Important.

“I’m still not asking.”

Mara looked at him.

“I know.”

Then:

“I love you too.”

His face changed.

“But love isn’t enough yet.”

“I know.”

He surrendered three weeks later.

Mara lived.

Bakery grew.

Girls started first grade.

No prison-romance performance.

She wrote sometimes.

They wrote pictures.

Adrien replied with terrible drawings.

Life continued.

Fourteen months later, he came home.

He did not call Mara first.

He saw Dante.

Met lawyers.

Saw therapist.

Spent time with family.

Then, two days later, texted:

Would you like dinner?

Mara smiled.

Yes.

Ferrante’s?

No.

He replied:

Good. I hate that table now.

May you like

She laughed.

Second first date began at a noisy pizza place where nobody rented the room.
