Chapter 12 - The Ward-Thorne Foundation

The grand opening of the Ward-Thorne Pediatric Research Center in central Boston was the most prominent philanthropic event of the season.
Hundreds of leading medical researchers, pediatric neurologists, and civic leaders gathered in the soaring glass atrium of the new state-of-the-art facility.
The foundation, backed by an initial endowment of two billion dollars from the Thorne trust, was dedicated exclusively to uncovering rare chemical toxins and juvenile neuro-muscular disorders.
Evelyn Ward stood at the podium on the elevated stage, dressed in an elegant emerald-green silk dress that complemented her radiant hazel eyes.
Her hair was styled in soft waves over her shoulders, and a brilliant diamond pendant—a personal gift from Gabriel—glittered at her throat.
“For too long, children suffering from rare, unexplained neurological decline have been written off as medical mysteries,” Evelyn addressed the captivated audience, her voice strong, clear, and inspiring.
“This facility will bridge the gap between forensic biochemistry and pediatric intensive care.”
“We will not accept 'inconclusive' as an answer when a child's life is hanging in the balance.”
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, flashing cameras capturing her triumphant moment from every angle.
In the front row, Noah and Ethan sat proudly in matching navy-blue blazers, clapping vigorously with huge smiles on their faces.
Beside them sat Gabriel, his eyes fixed on Evelyn with an overwhelming sense of pride, reverence, and profound love.
When Evelyn stepped down from the stage, the boys immediately ran to her, wrapping their arms around her waist.
“You were amazing, Mom!” Noah exclaimed proudly.
The word hung in the air for a brief, magical second—sweet, natural, and completely unforced.
Evelyn’s heart swelled with an emotion so deep and pure it brought tears of joy to her eyes.
She knelt down, wrapping her arms around both boys and kissing their cheeks.
“Thank you, my sweet angels,” Evelyn whispered softly.
Gabriel walked over, placing his hand gently on the small of Evelyn’s back, his steel-gray eyes shining with absolute happiness.
“They spoke the truth, you know,” Gabriel murmured close to her ear.

“You are the heart of this family, Evelyn.”
“And nothing in this world will ever change that.”
