Chapter 10 - The Sovereign’s Proposal

“Where are you going, Evelyn?” Gabriel’s deep baritone voice stopped her just as her hand touched the brass handle of the conservatory door.
Evelyn turned around to find Gabriel standing a few paces away, while Noah and Ethan were happily back on the rug, engrossed in their Lego construction.
“My contract is fulfilled, Mr. Thorne,” Evelyn said with professional poise, adjusting the strap of her leather satchel.
“Your sons are fully recovered.”
“Their neurological pathways have completely stabilized, and the federal task force has secured all evidence against Vance and Victoria.”
“You no longer require my services.”
Gabriel stepped closer, his intense steel-gray eyes locking onto hers with a gaze so powerful, raw, and intimate that it made her breath catch in her throat.
“You saved my family from annihilation, Evelyn,” Gabriel said softly, reaching out to gently clasp her hand in his.
His touch was surprisingly warm and tender, completely contrasting the ruthless reputation of the underworld kingpin.
“For years, I believed that money, firepower, and terror were the only shields that could protect the people I love.”
“I was a fool.”
“You brought truth into this house.”
“You brought light back into my children’s lives when every specialist in the world had abandoned them to the grave.”
Noah looked up from his Lego tower, his bright eyes wide with hopeful expectation.
“Miss Evelyn, are you leaving?” Noah asked, his lower lip quivering slightly.
“Please don't go,” Ethan piped up, running over to grab the hem of her olive-drab wool coat.
“We want you to stay with us and Daddy.”
Evelyn looked down at the two beautiful boys who had stolen her heart over the past seventy-two hours of relentless battle.
She felt a lump form in her throat.
Gabriel stepped beside his sons, placing his hands gently on their shoulders before looking back into Evelyn’s eyes.
“I am liquidating all syndicate logistics operations, Evelyn,” Gabriel announced with calm, absolute certainty.
“As of this morning, forty billion dollars of corporate assets are being converted into legitimate global maritime infrastructure and pediatric medical research trusts.”
“I am establishing the Ward-Thorne Foundation for Rare Pediatric Diagnostics.”
“And I want you to serve as its President and Chief Medical Director.”
Evelyn looked at him in genuine astonishment.
“Gabriel… that is an unprecedented undertaking…”
“That is only the first part of my proposal,” Gabriel interrupted gently, his fingers tightening warmly around hers.
“The second part is personal.”
“Stay here, Evelyn.”
“Stay in the Berkshires with me, Noah, and Ethan.”
“Help me build a real home for my sons—a home that is no longer an armed fortress of fear, but a sanctuary of life and love.”
Evelyn looked at Gabriel’s strong, unyielding face, seeing the raw vulnerability and honest devotion in his eyes.
She looked at Noah and Ethan, who were looking up at her like two little angels whose prayers were about to be answered.
She slowly unclasped the strap of her worn leather satchel, letting it rest gently on the side table.
“Under one condition, Gabriel,” Evelyn said, a playful, radiant smile breaking across her face.
Gabriel’s eyebrows raised with genuine amusement.
“Name it.”
“No more encrypted security codes in the nursery,” Evelyn laughed softly.
“From now on, we open the windows and let the fresh air in.”
Gabriel pulled her into his arms, wrapping his strong embrace around her as Noah and Ethan cheered, jumping up and wrapping their arms around both of their legs.
