Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF POWER

Owen read the document without moving.
His mother had been the only person he trusted more than Nathan. After his father's death, she had taught him how to survive the family's brutal world without becoming entirely consumed by it.
Now her signature sat beneath a medical authorization designed to keep him helpless.
"Find her," he said.
Rocco left immediately.
I sat beside Owen, unsure whether to touch him.
"Maybe she had a reason."
He gave a bitter laugh.
"That's what I've told myself about every person who betrayed me."
We discovered Eleanor had been living in a secluded estate in Connecticut under the protection of private security. Her lawyers claimed she was recovering from a serious illness and could not receive visitors.
But a financial record showed she had transferred millions of dollars to Nathan shortly before the crash.
Owen insisted on leaving the hospital.
His doctors warned that he could barely stand, but he refused to wait. With a cane and two guards, he walked to the private exit.
I accompanied him because he asked, not because he ordered me to.
The estate stood behind iron gates and towering trees. Eleanor was waiting in the drawing room when we arrived.
She looked older than her photographs, but her eyes were sharp.
"Owen," she whispered.
He stopped several feet away.
"Why?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"Your father built this family on violence. I thought if Nathan controlled the organization while you remained unconscious, fewer people would die."
"You drugged your own son."
"I believed you would never recover."
"You didn't even give me the chance."
Eleanor covered her face.
Then she confessed that Nathan had promised to dismantle the family's criminal operations if Owen never returned to power.
But he had lied.
He had continued the trafficking, extortion, and money laundering behind a network of legitimate businesses.
Eleanor had finally realized what she'd enabled.
Before Owen could respond, the estate's security alarm sounded.
A guard rushed inside.
"Mrs. Hartley, we've lost contact with the outer gate."
Eleanor looked toward the window.
May you like
Her face turned pale.
"Nathan is here."
