Chapter 14 - THE PROPOSAL

Six months later, I returned to the hospital where everything had begun.
Not as a housekeeper.
As a nursing student.
Owen had helped me find a program that allowed me to study while working part-time. He offered to pay every expense, but I insisted on covering what I could myself.
He respected my decision.
That mattered more than the money.
The investigation had transformed both our lives. Nathan was awaiting trial, Dr. Shaw had lost his medical license and faced criminal charges, and the hospital had replaced its leadership after an independent review uncovered years of misconduct.
Owen had surrendered the businesses tied to illegal activity and established a foundation to support victims of organized crime. He still faced legal consequences for his own past, and he accepted them without excuses.
He no longer carried himself like a man who expected the world to obey.
Sometimes, I caught him smiling at strangers.
Sometimes, he still woke from nightmares.
Healing wasn't a straight road, but we were learning to walk it together.
On the anniversary of the night he awakened, Owen took me to the rooftop garden overlooking Manhattan.
The city glittered beneath us.
"I've been thinking about something," he said.
"That usually means trouble."
He laughed.
Then he took a small velvet box from his coat.
My breath caught.
"Emily Carter, the first thing you ever gave me was a kiss when I couldn't ask for one."
I covered my face, horrified.
"That is absolutely not how I wanted our love story remembered."
"I know." His expression grew serious. "And the most important thing you gave me afterward was the freedom to choose who I wanted to become."
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
"I'm not asking you to save me again. I'm asking whether you'd like to build a life with me. One where neither of us has to be afraid of the other, or of the past."
Tears blurred the skyline.
"Yes," I whispered.
He slid the ring onto my finger and kissed me beneath the rooftop lights.
For once, there were no alarms, no threats, and no footsteps racing down a hospital corridor.
Only the man I loved.
And the future we'd chosen together.
Then Owen's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen, and his smile faded.
An unknown number had sent him a photograph of his father's grave.
May you like
Beneath it were four words.
Your father is alive.
