Chapter 6 - THE BETRAYAL

I should have quit that night.
Instead, I returned to work wearing a different coat and carrying a borrowed phone. Fear had followed me through every corridor, but so had a stubborn certainty that Owen deserved the truth.
At 1:30 a.m., I entered the medical records department.
My employee badge opened the first door. The second required an administrator's authorization, so I waited until a technician stepped away and followed another employee inside.
I searched Owen's file.
The first six months were missing.
But an audit log revealed that the original records had been transferred to an encrypted server under the hospital's former chief financial officer, Peter Lawson.
He had resigned six months earlier.
I copied the reference number and hurried toward the exit.
A hand covered my mouth.
I fought desperately until a familiar voice whispered, "Emily, it's me."
Marcus released me.
"Are you insane?" I hissed.
"Someone followed you here. We have to move."
He led me through a service corridor and into a loading area. A black sedan waited near the dumpsters.
I refused to get inside.
"Why should I trust you?"
Marcus looked exhausted.
"Because I know what happened after the crash."
He finally admitted that he'd been driving Owen's SUV that night. Someone had tampered with the vehicle before the meeting, and Marcus had switched seats with Owen at the last minute after Owen received a threatening message.
Owen had insisted on driving himself.
Marcus had survived because he was never inside the vehicle when it went off the road.
"Why did you disappear?"
"Because the men who arrived at the crash site weren't police. They took Owen's phone, destroyed the evidence, and told me I'd be next."
Before I could respond, headlights swept across the loading area.
Three men stepped from a van.
Marcus shoved me behind the sedan.
One raised a weapon.
Then another voice cut through the darkness.
"Don't touch her."
Nathan Hartley emerged from the shadows, adjusting his expensive watch.

He looked at me and smiled.
"Emily, I'm glad you've found my brother's little secret."
