Chapter 10 - THE ESCAPE

The first gunshot shattered the drawing room window.
Rocco dragged Eleanor behind a stone fireplace while Owen pulled me toward the hallway. His injured legs nearly gave way, but he refused to let go of my hand.
We escaped through a servants' corridor as armed men stormed the front entrance.
Outside, a black SUV waited with its engine running.
Rocco had arranged a backup vehicle before entering the estate. We climbed inside just as bullets struck the stone wall behind us.
For twenty minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Owen turned toward me.
"Are you hurt?"
I shook my head.
He touched my cheek with trembling fingers, searching for injuries.
"I thought I'd lost you."
"You don't get to lose me that easily."
He closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, something had changed.
"I need to tell you something, Emily. Before the crash, I wasn't a good man. I built an empire by making people afraid of me. Sometimes I told myself the violence was necessary. Sometimes it wasn't."
I listened without interrupting.
"I'm not asking you to forgive everything I've done. But if I survive this, I want to become someone who doesn't need people to fear him."
For the first time, Owen sounded less like a mafia boss and more like a man terrified of what he'd become.
I squeezed his hand.
"Then start by telling the truth."
We reached a safe apartment in Brooklyn shortly before dawn. Rocco contacted a federal agent who had been investigating Nathan's organization for years.
The agent agreed to meet us.
But when he arrived, he brought devastating news.
Nathan had already filed a complaint accusing Owen of orchestrating the crimes committed during his two-year absence.
The evidence included financial transfers, recorded conversations, and signed documents.
All bearing Owen's name.
"He fabricated everything," Rocco said.
The agent shook his head.
"Some of these records are authentic."
Owen stared at the papers.
Then he recognized the signature at the bottom of the final page.
It belonged to someone who had visited him every week while he lay unconscious.
May you like
Someone who had kissed his forehead and promised he would wake up.
His mother had signed the documents herself.
