Chapter 12 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

The folder contained every personal detail about my life.
My childhood address. My brother's university. My work schedule. Even photographs taken outside the apartment where we'd been hiding.
Nathan wasn't merely trying to escape prosecution.
He intended to destroy anyone who could testify against him.
We contacted the federal agent and arranged a controlled meeting at an abandoned warehouse where Nathan had agreed to exchange evidence for safe passage out of the country.
Owen insisted on attending.
"You can barely walk without help," I protested.
"Then I'll bring help."
"That's not funny."
He took my hands.
"Emily, I spent two years trapped in a bed while someone else decided whether I lived or died. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life hiding from the truth."
I understood what he meant.
I also knew that loving him didn't mean agreeing with every risk he took.
We compromised. Owen would remain with the federal team outside the warehouse while I delivered a copy of the medical records through a protected channel.
The plan was simple.
It lasted less than five minutes.
Nathan's men seized control of the warehouse entrance before the agents could establish their positions. Gunfire erupted, and I was dragged behind a stack of crates.
I heard Owen shouting my name.
Then Nathan appeared through the smoke, holding a gun.
"You've caused enough trouble, Emily."
He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the loading bay.
Owen emerged from the opposite corridor, supported by Rocco.
"Let her go."
Nathan laughed.
"You gave up an empire for a housekeeper."
"No," Owen said quietly. "I gave up an empire because I finally understood what it cost."
Nathan raised his weapon.
A federal agent shouted for him to drop it.
Instead, Nathan turned toward Owen.
I threw myself between them.
The gunshot exploded through the warehouse.
Pain tore across my shoulder, and I fell.
Owen caught me before I hit the concrete.
His face changed as he pressed his hands against my wound.
"Stay with me, Emily. Please."
I tried to answer, but the room was spinning.

Then I heard Nathan scream as officers tackled him to the ground.
The last thing I saw before everything went dark was Owen holding me, tears streaming down his face.
