Chapter 11 - LOVE IN THE SHADOWS

The federal investigation left Owen with two choices: cooperate fully or face prosecution for crimes committed under his authority.
He chose to cooperate.
For the next several days, he surrendered financial records, identified shell companies, and provided evidence against the people who had profited from his organization.
It was the first time I'd seen him willingly give up power.
But the danger remained.
Nathan had disappeared, and his remaining associates were searching for us.
We stayed in a small apartment above a closed bakery. Owen slept badly, waking from nightmares about the crash. Some nights, he sat by the window until sunrise, afraid that closing his eyes would mean surrendering control again.
One evening, I found him struggling to fasten the buttons of his shirt.
His hands still shook from the prolonged immobility.
"Let me help," I said.
He looked embarrassed.
"I used to sign contracts worth millions without blinking. Now I can't button a shirt."
"You're relearning how to live. That's not failure."
He watched me for a long moment.
"Why are you still here?"
I could have given him a hundred practical reasons. The investigation. The threats. The fact that Nathan might target me whether I stayed or left.
Instead, I told him the truth.
"Because when everyone treated you like a fortune waiting to be inherited, I saw a lonely man in a bed. And because somewhere along the way, I stopped being afraid of you."
His expression softened.
"Emily, I don't want you to stay because you feel responsible for me."
"I don't."
He reached for my hand.
"Then can I kiss you?"
I smiled through sudden tears.
"Yes."
His kiss was gentle, nothing like the impulsive moment that had started everything. This time, neither of us was confused about why it happened.
For a few precious seconds, the danger outside disappeared.
Then Rocco burst through the door.
"We found Nathan."
He placed a photograph on the table.
Nathan stood outside a courthouse beside a woman wearing a dark coat.
I recognized her immediately.
May you like
Dr. Shaw's wife.
And in her hand was a folder marked with my full name.
