Chapter 9 - The Decrypted Confession

At six o'clock that evening, the manor’s private library was bathed in the warm, peaceful glow of a roaring fire.
Elena sat on the leather sofa, sipping hot tea while Chloe played on the Persian rug with a brand-new wooden dollhouse.
I inserted Julian’s titanium flash drive into the library’s master encrypted terminal, opening the final hidden video file labeled: To My Big Brother, Vincent.
The high-definition monitor lit up, displaying Julian sitting in the cabin of his sailboat four years ago, wearing his favorite worn navy sweater.
His hazel eyes were filled with the gentle, radiant warmth I had missed every single day for nearly a decade.
”Vincent, if you are watching this, it means I didn't make it back from the marina, and Elena brought our little girl home to you,” Julian spoke, his voice filling the quiet room like a timeless embrace.
”I’m sorry I kept Elena and Chloe a secret from you for so long, big brother.”
”I knew how heavy the crown was on your head, and I wanted to keep my family pure from the violence of the streets.”
”I know you spent your entire life believing that love is a weakness, Vincent.”
”Our father was wrong; love isn't the weakness that kills us—it’s the only armor that makes living in this dark world worth the fight.”
Julian smiled into the camera, a tear slipping down his cheek as he held up a small silver rattle.
”Be a father to my little girl, Vincent.”
”Teach her how to laugh, teach her how to be brave, and let her know that her daddy loved her more than the stars in the sky.”
”I love you, brother… take care of our family.”
The video faded to black, leaving the library in a state of sacred, tearful stillness.
Elena was weeping softly into her handkerchief, her heart finally unburdened by the four years of agonizing secrecy.
I stood motionless before the screen, feeling a single, warm tear track down my scarred cheek.
Little Chloe scrambled up from the rug, running over to my legs and tugging on the hem of my tailored trousers.
I knelt down, scooping the precious girl into my arms and holding her tightly against my chest, feeling her tiny hands pat my shoulder.
“Don’t cry, Uncle Vincent,” Chloe whispered softly into my ear.
“Daddy is with the angels now, and we have you.”
I pressed my lips against her soft forehead, whispering an eternal vow into the quiet room.

“I will never let anyone hurt you, little bird,” I promised.
“As long as I draw breath, this entire world belongs to you.”
