Chapter 3 - The DNA Protocol

At three o'clock in the morning, the heavy steel security doors of the manor’s private medical pavilion opened without a sound.

Doctor Alistair Sterling—my personal physician and a retired military trauma surgeon—stepped into the examination suite.

Alistair carried a portable genetic sequencing terminal, adjusting his wire-rimmed spectacles as he looked at the sleeping child on the bed.

Chloe had finally drifted off to sleep, curled securely under three cashmere blankets, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Elena sat in the armchair beside the bed, her hand resting protectively over her daughter’s small feet.

“The swab analysis is complete, Vincent,” Alistair said quietly, handing me the digital diagnostic readout.

The screen displayed the comparative genomic mapping between my blood sample and Chloe’s cellular markers.

A bold green banner flashed across the top of the interface: PATERNAL KINSHIP CONFIRMED: 99.99% BIOLOGICAL NIECE.

The final lingering doubt evaporated from my soul, replaced by an unshakeable, terrifying sense of purpose.

Julian had not only left me a memory; he had left me his living, breathing daughter to raise and protect.

“Her red blood cell count is slightly deficient from chronic nutritional stress,” Alistair reported, his voice tinged with professional sorrow.

“And she has minor bronchial inflammation from the damp basements they were forced to hide in over the winter.”

“Fix it, Alistair,” I commanded, placing my hand gently on the sleeping child’s forehead.

“Order every specialized pediatric vitamin, schedule the best respiratory therapists in North America, and prep the eastern wing.”

“She will never breathe damp air again.”

Alistair nodded respectfully, packing his diagnostic equipment with practiced military efficiency.

“What about the syndicate council, Vincent?” Alistair asked in a low whisper.

“The five ruling families are convening at the Union Club on Monday for the maritime contract distribution.”

“Bellini has already declared himself the interim guardian of Julian’s unallocated shares.”

I walked over to the reinforced glass window, looking out over the dark, turbulent expanse of Lake Michigan.

The private security lights illuminated the perimeter fences where twenty armed guards patrolled with tactical assault rifles.

“Bellini thinks he is walking into a coronation on Monday,” I said, my voice echoing through the sterile room like a death sentence.

“He does not know that the true owner of the Thorne dynasty has just woken up in my house.”

I turned back to Elena, who was watching me with wide, tear-filled hazel eyes.

“From this second onward, Elena, you are not a maid in this house.”

May you like

“You are the Lady of the Thorne Estate, and my brother’s wife.”

“And anyone who ever made you scrub a floor in this city will answer to me on their knees.”
