Chapter 12 - The Grand Jury Strike

Three weeks later, the grand ceremonial courtroom of the Dirksen Federal Building was packed to maximum capacity.
Over three hundred journalists, civic leaders, and citizens watched in breathless silence as the final criminal trial of Dominic Bellini convened.
Bellini sat at the defense table in a bright orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles shackled to the floor with heavy chains.
His once-arrogant posture was permanently crushed, his hair completely white, his face gaunt beneath the harsh fluorescent courtroom lights.
Presiding over the bench was the Honorable Judge Eleanor Vance—a legendary federal jurist known for her uncompromising destruction of organized crime.
Prosecutor Claire Montgomery stood before the podium, presenting the sixty-four-count grand jury indictment.
“Your Honor, the defendant did not merely engage in corporate racketeering and financial fraud,” Montgomery announced in a voice that rang like steel.
“He executed the premeditated assassination of Julian Thorne, fabricated federal documents to deceive a grieving family, and attempted to murder a four-year-old child in her bed.”
“He represents an unprecedented danger to human society and a total, chilling absence of moral conscience.”
Judge Eleanor Vance adjusted her reading glasses, looking down at the trembling defendant with cold, majestic authority.
“Dominic Bellini, the evidence presented before this court demonstrates a level of depravity that defies human comprehension,” Judge Vance stated.
“The jury has returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all sixty-four felony counts.”
