Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Heiress

Six months later, the golden summer sun rose over the rolling green lawns of the Thorne lakefront estate.
The private boathouse at the edge of Lake Michigan had been completely restored, filled with the sweet scent of fresh cedar shavings and varnish.
Sitting on the wooden cradle was a magnificent twenty-four-foot wooden sailboat, its polished mahogany hull gleaming like liquid amber.
Painted across the stern in elegant gold lettering was the name: THE LITTLE SPARROW.
Five-year-old Chloe stood on the wooden dock wearing a bright yellow sundress and canvas boat shoes, holding a small paintbrush dipped in clear varnish.
She had spent the entire morning helping me paint the final trim on the boat her father had started building five years ago.
“Is it finished, Uncle Vincent?” Chloe asked, looking up at me with her sparkling emerald eyes, her nose dotted with a speck of varnish.
I knelt down beside her on the sunlit dock, wiping the speck of varnish from her cheek with my thumb.
“It is finished, little bird,” I replied, my heart overflowing with an unshakeable sense of joy and fulfillment.
“Your daddy built the hull, and you and I put the sails on her.”
Elena walked down the wooden steps from the terrace, wearing a beautiful white linen dress, carrying a silver tray with fresh lemonade and sandwiches.
Her face was radiant, relaxed, and glowing with the profound, unshakeable peace of a woman whose world was whole again.
She set the tray on the teak table and wrapped her arms around my waist, leaning her head against my broad chest.
“Julian is smiling down on this dock right now, Vincent,” Elena whispered softly, kissing my jaw.

“He gave us the greatest gift in the universe, Elena,” I said, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as we watched Chloe proudly admire her handiwork.
“He taught me how to have a heart again.”
