Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Lake Shore Drive

The rain beat a relentless tempo against the grand leaded-glass windows as the library fire crackled into dying embers.

I scooped Chloe into my left arm, lifting the small girl effortlessly against my chest as she tucked her head under my chin.

With my right hand, I gently helped Elena rise from the floor, guiding her to the leather sofa beside the hearth.

Chloe ran her tiny hand along the rough stubble of my jaw, completely unafraid of the scars marking my face.

“Your hands aren't cold anymore, Mr. Vincent,” Chloe murmured softly, resting her cheek against my collarbone.

“Because you brought the warmth back into this house, little bird,” I replied, my voice softening into a tone no living soul had heard in thirty years.

I looked at Elena, whose tear-stained face was illuminated by the flickering flames.

“Tell me what happened the night of the warehouse explosion on Lake Shore Drive, Elena.”

“The federal reports claimed Julian turned state’s evidence and was placed into protective custody in Oregon.”

Elena shook her head slowly, pulling a sealed titanium flash drive from the velvet lining of her silver locket.

“Julian never went to the federal prosecutors, Vincent,” Elena revealed, her voice steadying with fierce resolve.

“Dominic Bellini fabricated those federal documents to make you believe your own brother had betrayed you.”

“Bellini ambushed Julian at the private marina forty-eight hours before the harbor fire.”

“They shot him twice in the shoulder, locked him inside the offshore logistics vault, and demanded the master encryption keys to your sovereign trusts.”

My vision blurred with a red, suffocating haze of pure, murderous rage as the truth settled into my bones.

For four long years, I had believed my younger brother had sold my loyalty to the government and walked away with a new identity.

For four long years, I had mourned a traitor, unaware that he had bled to death in the dark to protect my name.

“Julian managed to wipe the main server before the charges detonated,” Elena whispered, clutching her daughter’s worn plush rabbit.

“He called me from an untraceable satellite frequency twelve minutes before the explosion.”

“He gave me the cryptographic recovery keys to his personal offshore trust—three hundred million dollars held under Chloe’s name.”

“He made me swear to live in the shadows until Bellini’s syndicate lowered their guard.”

“Two months ago, Bellini’s men found my apartment in South Chicago.”

“They kicked my door in, tore the walls apart, and threatened to drown Chloe in the bathtub if I didn't hand over the recovery keys.”

“I jumped out the fire escape with Chloe in my arms and ran straight into the only fortress Bellini dared not touch—your home.”

I tightened my grip on the little girl in my arms, feeling her tiny, steady heartbeat thumping against my ribs.

“Dominic Bellini spent twelve years calling me a brother while he tortured my flesh and blood,” I said in a whisper of pure arctic steel.

“He thinks he won the city.”

“Tonight, he is going to find out that the dead have come back to claim his head.”
