Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN IN DANIEL'S PHOTOGRAPH

My mother had been dead for seven years.

I had watched her decline in a hospital bed, held her hand during her final hours, and chosen the flowers for her funeral.

Yet the ring in Daniel's photograph was unmistakable.

It was an antique gold band with a tiny emerald set inside the curve. My father had given it to her on their twentieth anniversary. After she died, I had kept the ring in a velvet box in my bedroom.

It was still there.

So who was the woman wearing an identical one?

I enlarged the photograph and examined her face.

She looked to be in her late forties, with dark hair and a small scar beneath her chin.

Then I remembered something my mother had once told me.

She had a half sister she hadn't spoken to in decades.

Her name was Evelyn.

I had never met her. My mother claimed they had fallen out over an inheritance and never reconciled.

Could Evelyn have been helping Daniel?

I sent the photograph to Claire.

She called back almost immediately.

"Harper, I found something. The woman is Evelyn Shaw. She was listed as the executor of a trust established by your mother's family."

I sat down on the garage steps.

"What trust?"

"A property trust. It owned several buildings that were sold after your mother's death."

"Who received the money?"

Claire hesitated.

"One of the companies belongs to Richard Caldwell."

I closed my eyes.

My mother had inherited a small commercial property portfolio from her parents. She had never discussed the details with me, and I had assumed everything was settled before she died.

Now the same family accused of stealing charitable funds appeared connected to her inheritance.

"Why would Evelyn be meeting Daniel?"

"Perhaps they're working together. Perhaps they're trying to expose Richard. We don't know yet."

I looked at the photograph again.

Daniel had written the message himself.

He wanted me at the hotel.

I agreed to meet him the next morning, but Claire arranged for a private investigator to accompany me and notified the appropriate authorities about the suspicious financial records.

At 8:30 a.m., I entered the hotel lobby.

A man stood near the windows.

He had Julian's eyes, Richard's height, and a pale scar along his jaw.

He turned when I approached.

"Harper Caldwell?"

"Yes."

May you like

He glanced at the entrance.

Then he said, "Before I tell you what your husband did, you need to know that the woman who raised you may not have been your biological mother."
