Chapter 1 - THE FAMILY THAT KNEW

Julian's silence was the first honest thing he had given me in years.
I stood beside the dining table, watching my husband stare at the clock as though every passing second brought him closer to a disaster he had spent years preventing.
"Does your mother know about Mia?" I repeated.
Julian dragged a hand through his hair.
"This is exactly why I didn't want you inviting everyone."
"That wasn't my question."
Before he could answer, a car pulled into the driveway.
Then another.
My in-laws had arrived twenty minutes early.
Julian grabbed my wrist.
"Harper, listen to me. Whatever happens tonight, you cannot let them see that recording."
I looked at his hand until he released me.
"Why? Are you afraid they'll discover you cheated, or are you afraid they'll discover something else?"
His expression changed.
For one terrible second, I thought he might tell me the truth.
Instead, he leaned close and whispered, "You have no idea what you're about to destroy."
The doorbell rang.
I opened it to find Beatrice Caldwell standing beside her husband, Richard, and Julian's younger sister, Natalie. Beatrice carried a bouquet of white roses, but her smile disappeared when she saw my face.
Richard kissed my cheek.
"Happy anniversary, sweetheart."
Then he looked past me toward the staircase.
"Where's Mia?"
The question came too quickly.
I glanced at Beatrice.
She closed her eyes.
Natalie suddenly began crying.

And Julian, standing behind me, whispered a sentence that made the room feel unbearably cold.
"Mom, you promised Harper would never find out."
