Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO BOUGHT MY SILENCE

Beatrice looked as though Mia had struck her.
"That is a lie."
Mia shook her head, clutching her handbag.
"I have the messages."
Julian moved toward her.
"Mia, don't."
I stepped between them.
"Touch her, and the only recording tonight won't be the one on my phone."
Julian stopped.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that I was no longer the woman who would swallow every insult to preserve the appearance of a happy marriage.
Mia opened her bag and removed a second phone.
She had screenshots of messages from Beatrice instructing her to keep Julian calm, avoid discussing the marriage publicly, and make sure I never saw certain financial documents.
There were also payments.
Monthly transfers.
For eighteen months.
I stared at the amounts.
They were far larger than Mia's salary.
"Why was Beatrice paying you?"
Mia looked at my mother-in-law.
"Because she wanted me to stay close to Julian."
"To seduce him?"
"No." Mia's voice broke. "To watch him."
The room went silent.
Mia explained that Beatrice had hired her after discovering Julian was moving money from a family investment account. She had been told to report his visitors, record conversations when possible, and notify Beatrice if he attempted to transfer property.
But somewhere along the way, the arrangement had changed.
Julian began pursuing Mia.
Mia admitted she had allowed the relationship to continue because Julian promised to help her sick mother and claimed his marriage was already over.
"I knew you were kind," she whispered. "I knew you trusted me. I kept telling myself I could fix things before you got hurt."
I looked at her, struggling to separate her guilt from my own pain.
"You could have told me."
"I know."
Beatrice finally spoke.
"I was trying to protect you."
"By planting a spy in my home?"
Her lips trembled.
"By preventing Julian from taking everything you built."
Richard lowered his head.
Then Natalie pulled another document from the folder.
It was a transfer agreement for our house.
The signature at the bottom wasn't mine.
But the date was worse.
May you like
The transfer had been scheduled for midnight.
And the beneficiary was Caldwell Family Holdings, a company I had never heard of.
