Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER DIED

I had known Julian's family for eleven years.
In all that time, nobody had spoken about Daniel for more than a few sentences.
A tragic accident.
A stormy night.
A body that had supposedly been recovered before sunrise.
Julian once told me he had been too young to remember his brother well, although they were only four years apart.
Now his mother was crying, his father looked terrified, and a bank statement connected to a charity fraud contained Daniel's name.
"Is Daniel alive?" I asked.
Richard sat heavily behind his desk.
"No."
Beatrice looked at him.
"Stop lying."
He turned on her.
"You promised."
"I promised to protect the family. I never promised to protect a crime."
My pulse quickened.
Richard finally admitted that Daniel had survived the boating accident. He had been injured and taken to a private hospital under a false name after an argument with his father.
Daniel had discovered that Richard and several business partners were diverting charitable donations into private accounts. When he threatened to report them, the family arranged for him to disappear.
Julian had known part of the truth.
He had been told his brother was alive but forbidden to contact him.
"And you agreed?" I asked.
Julian looked down.
"My father said Daniel was unstable. He said exposing him would destroy the family."
"So you helped him steal money from vulnerable women?"
"I didn't start the transfers."
"But you continued them."
He had no answer.
Beatrice revealed that she had secretly sent Daniel money for years, hoping he would eventually return with evidence against Richard.
Mia had been hired partly to monitor Julian's movements because Beatrice suspected he was preparing to move the remaining funds.
The affair had begun after Julian discovered Mia was reporting to his mother. He had threatened to expose her mother's medical debt unless she stopped cooperating.
Mia admitted she had been frightened and ashamed.
I believed her fear.
I did not excuse her choices.
"Where is Daniel now?" I asked.
Beatrice handed me a folded letter.
"He contacted me last week."
The letter contained a hotel address and a meeting time.
Tomorrow morning.
May you like
But someone had written a warning across the bottom in red ink.
If Harper learns the truth, make sure she never reaches the meeting.
