Chapter 13 - THE DAY I LOST EVERYTHING

By the following morning, my name was everywhere.
A local business website published a story accusing me of misappropriating charitable donations. Someone had leaked selected bank statements, carefully cropped to make it appear that my design firm had received the money.
Clients began calling.
One canceled a major contract.
Another asked whether my business insurance would cover a fraud investigation.
I sat in Claire's office, staring at my phone.
"They're destroying my reputation before the evidence can be reviewed."
Claire remained calm.
"Then we respond with facts, not panic."
She had already submitted the authenticated recording, the access logs, and the fraudulent confession to investigators. The bank had confirmed that the suspicious transactions originated from accounts controlled by Richard's companies.
But public accusations moved faster than legal findings.
That afternoon, I received a notice from the landlord of my studio.
The building was under review because of the disputed property trust.
I looked at the letter and began to cry.
I had spent years building my firm from a rented desk and a secondhand computer. I had worked weekends, missed vacations, and turned down opportunities because I wanted to build something lasting.
Now Richard was trying to make me look like a criminal while taking the very places where I had built my life.
Daniel sat beside me.
"You don't have to fight every battle today."
"Yes, I do."
"No," he said gently. "You have to survive long enough to win the right ones."
For the first time, I understood that strength did not mean refusing to feel afraid.
It meant continuing even when fear was all I had left.
That evening, Julian arrived at Claire's office with his attorney.
He looked as though he had not slept.
"I'll testify," he said.
I studied him.
"Why now?"
"Because my father told the investigators I acted alone."
His voice cracked.
"He is prepared to let me go to prison while keeping the money."
I felt no satisfaction.
"You should tell the truth because it's the truth, Julian. Not because your father has stopped protecting you."
He nodded.
Then he handed Claire a signed statement confirming that Richard had directed the fraudulent transfers and arranged for my signature to be copied.
It was the first genuinely useful thing Julian had done for me in months.
As he turned to leave, he paused.
"I did love you, Harper."
I looked at him for a long moment.
"Maybe you did. But love without honesty isn't a marriage. It's a story one person tells while the other pays for it."
He walked out without answering.
Two hours later, Claire received confirmation that investigators had enough evidence to seek search warrants for Richard's offices.
But before the warrants could be executed, Richard made one final move.

He transferred the remaining funds into an account overseas.
And the account holder was listed as Harper Caldwell.
