Chapter 7 - THE MESSAGE ON MY WINDSHIELD

I left the study with the letter hidden inside my purse.

For the first time that night, Julian did not follow me.

He stood beside the staircase, staring at the floor while his family argued behind him.

I could hear Richard accusing Beatrice of betrayal.

I could hear Natalie demanding to know why everyone had lied about Daniel.

And I could hear Mia crying quietly in the kitchen.

I wanted to feel victorious.

Instead, I felt as though I had stepped into a room where every wall concealed another door.

At eleven fifteen, I called my attorney, Claire Morgan.

She answered on the second ring.

"Harper, tell me you haven't signed anything."

"I haven't. But someone has forged my signature on a property transfer."

Her tone changed immediately.

"Don't confront anyone else tonight. Photograph every document and send me copies. I'll contact the bank and request an emergency hold."

I sent the files.

Claire went silent when she saw the charitable foundation records.

"This is bigger than a divorce," she said. "Do not move the original documents without documenting where you found them."

"I also have a meeting address for Daniel Caldwell."

"Then don't go alone."

I agreed.

Before leaving the house, I retrieved my coat and walked toward the garage.

My car was parked beneath the motion lights.

Something white had been tucked beneath the windshield wiper.

I unfolded the note.

Stay away from Daniel. Your husband isn't the only person who can destroy your life.

Beneath the message was a photograph of me leaving the house earlier that evening.

Someone had been watching me.

I immediately called Claire again.

Then I noticed the photograph's reflection.

A dark sedan was parked across the street.

The same sedan I had seen outside my design studio two days earlier.

I took a picture of it.

The driver pulled away before I could read the license plate.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered without speaking.

A man's voice came through.

"Mrs. Caldwell, if you want to know what happened to Daniel, meet me at the hotel tomorrow."

"Who is this?"

"The man your husband believes is dead."

The line went silent.

A second message arrived moments later.

It contained a photograph of Daniel standing outside the hotel.

May you like

He was alive.

And beside him stood a woman wearing my mother's wedding ring.
