Chapter 8 - The Edge of the Abyss

The freezing rain whipped across Arthur’s face as he burst through the tunnel exit onto the wooden planks of the private marina. The black waters of Lake Michigan churned violently under the gale-force winds, waves crashing against the stone breakwater.
Evelyn was desperately trying to untie the heavy mooring ropes of the twin-engine speedboat, her expensive dress soaked and heavy with water. She dropped the duffel bag onto the wet deck as she heard the sound of Arthur’s footsteps approaching.
She spun around, pulling a small pearl-handled revolver from her coat pocket, aiming it directly at Arthur’s chest with shaking hands. “Stay back, Arthur! I swear to God I will shoot you!”
“Shoot me then, Evelyn,” Arthur said, walking forward steadily without stopping, the barrel of his own gun held low. “You killed Nora, you tried to murder my seven-year-old son, and you poisoned my home for two straight years.”
“Nora was weak!” Evelyn screamed against the howling wind, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. “She didn't deserve this wealth! She didn't know how to wield real power!”
“Nora was ten times the human being you will ever be,” Arthur replied, his voice cutting through the tempest like steel. “She knew how to love, and she knew how to protect her family.”
A massive rogue wave suddenly crashed over the wooden dock, sweeping the duffel bag off the boat and into the churning black depths below. Bundles of bearer bonds, millions of dollars in stolen wealth, scattered across the frothing water, disappearing instantly into the dark lake.
Evelyn screamed in horror, watching her entire life’s ambition vanish beneath the waves in a matter of seconds. “No! My money! My father’s inheritance!”

In her distraction, Arthur lunged forward, grabbing her wrist and twisting it upward until the small revolver slipped from her fingers into the lake. He shoved her against the wooden piling, pinning her arms behind her back with iron handcuffs from his tactical belt.
Evelyn collapsed onto the wet wood, sobbing hysterically as the reality of her total destruction crashed down upon her. “It’s over, Arthur… you have nothing left either… Dominic called the federal agents… they think you ordered the hit on Nora!”
