Chapter 10 - The Hidden Will

Three days later, the morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, bathing the Vance family law offices in warm, golden light. The vast mahogany conference room was quiet, save for the rhythmic turning of legal parchment handled by Nora’s personal estate attorney.

Arthur sat at the head of the table, holding Leo on his lap, while Clara sat quietly to their right in a modest navy dress. The legal documents on the table bore the golden embossed seal of the Supreme Court of Illinois.

“Arthur, as you know, Nora’s original will was locked under a conditional fraud injunction,” the attorney explained, adjusting his spectacles. “She stipulated that if she died under suspicious circumstances, her fifty-one percent controlling share of Vance Global would not pass to you or any future spouse.”

Arthur nodded solemnly, feeling no anger, only the deep respect for a woman who had fought to protect her legacy until her final breath. “Where does the ownership go?”

“To Leo Arthur Vance, held in an irrevocable trust until his twenty-fifth birthday,” the attorney announced, sliding the final deed forward. “And Nora designated a sole, independent legal guardian and trustee to oversee both the boy’s welfare and the corporate voting rights.”

The attorney looked directly at Clara, placing a signed parchment before her. “Nora appointed her sister, Clara Hayes-Montgomery, as the primary executor and legal guardian of the Vance estate.”

Arthur turned to Clara, a faint, genuine smile softening his exhausted features for the first time in years. “Nora knew you were the only one who could never be bought, Clara.”

Clara touched the signature line where Nora’s elegant handwriting rested, a single tear escaping her eye and landing on the legal parchment. “I didn't want the money, Arthur. I only came here to make sure Leo survived.”

“You saved my life, and you saved my son’s life,” Arthur said, placing his hand over hers with profound gratitude. “This company belongs to Leo and Nora’s bloodline. I will serve as Chief Operating Officer only if you agree to oversee the board.”

Leo looked up at Clara, his small face bright with innocence and healing. “Does Aunt Clara get to live with us forever now, Daddy?”

Clara smiled through her tears, wrapping her arms around the boy. “Forever, Leo. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
