Chapter 6 - The 52-Second Truth

Arthur did not lower his weapon by a single millimeter, his finger resting steadily on the cold curved trigger. He pulled an encrypted tablet from his inner trench coat pocket and tossed it onto the concrete floor between them.

“The data recovery team in Zurich just bypassed your encryption protocols, Evelyn,” Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “The fifty-two missing seconds are restored on this cloud drive.”

Evelyn stared at the glowing tablet screen as if it were a venomous snake coiled to strike. The recovered high-definition footage began to play automatically, illuminating the grey concrete with crisp, indisputable clarity.

On the screen, Evelyn could be seen standing at the top of the grand staircase, whispering frantically with Dominic Cross. Dominic handed her a small amber glass vial labeled Potassium Chloride—a chemical designed to induce an undetectable heart attack in a sleeping adult.

Then, seven-year-old Leo stepped out from the library shadow holding his velvet teddy bear, having witnessed the entire exchange. Without a second of hesitation, Evelyn turned, grabbed the child by his shoulders, and hurled him violently down the thirty-foot marble drop.

The screen froze on Evelyn’s twisted, remorseless face as she watched the small boy tumble down the hard steps.

“You pushed a child to protect a poison you intended for me,” Arthur whispered, the horrifying magnitude of her evil settling into his soul. “You wanted the entire Vance empire, and you were going to butcher my entire family to get it.”

Evelyn’s hysterical facade suddenly melted away, replaced by an eerie, chilling silence. She slowly lowered the silver detonator, a cold, mocking smirk spreading across her crimson lips.

“Your family built this empire on my father’s ruined bones, Arthur,” she hissed, her voice dripping with pure, concentrated malice. “Twenty years ago, your father orchestrated the corporate buyout that drove Thomas Cross to jump from the Golden Gate Bridge.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed in shock. “Thomas Cross was your father?”

“Dominic and I promised over his grave that we would take back every single cent, every asset, and every drop of blood your family possessed,” she spat. “Nora figured it out too late, and you… you were too stupidly in love with my smile to see the dagger in my hand.”
