Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Deception

The sound of sirens began to wail faintly in the distant valley, slicing through the raging storm. Dominic kicked the emergency fire door open, tumbling down the iron spiral service stairs while clutching his bleeding shoulder.

Arthur pursued him relentlessly, but Dominic managed to throw a heavy smoke canister onto the landing, filling the narrow stairwell with blinding, toxic grey fumes. Arthur coughed violently, forced to retreat back to the open third-floor landing to protect his son.

Clara had already breached Leo’s room, wrapping the frightened boy in a heavy woolen blanket and securing him in her arms. Leo was shivering, his eyes wide with terror as the acrid smell of smoke drifted under the doorframe.

“We need to get to the panic room in the basement,” Clara urged, her voice steady despite the chaos unfolding around them. “The master vault is right next to it; we can corner Evelyn before she accesses the underground tunnel.”

Arthur loaded a fresh magazine into his sidearm, his eyes burning with an icy, unforgiving resolve. “She will not leave this estate alive unless she tells me everything she did to Nora.”

They navigated down the service elevator shaft, using the manual pulley system to descend directly into the reinforced concrete basement. The heavy steel door to the family treasury stood wide open, its biometric lock melted by an industrial thermite charge.

Inside the vault, Evelyn was frantically stuffing stacks of bearer bonds and velvet jewelry boxes into a black leather duffel bag. Her crimson gown was torn at the hem, her hair disheveled, her mask of high-society elegance completely shattered.

“Put the bag down, Evelyn,” Arthur’s voice boomed against the concrete walls, cold enough to freeze water.

Evelyn jumped, dropping a stack of bonds that scattered across the floor like autumn leaves. She spun around, holding a small silver detonator in her trembling, sweat-slicked hand.

“Don’t come any closer, Arthur!” she screamed hysterically, her eyes wild with animal desperation. “Dominic wired the structural pillars! If I press this, the entire manor collapses into the foundation!”

Clara stepped forward, shielding Leo behind a reinforced steel pillar. “You won’t press it, Evelyn, because you love money far more than you love revenge.”
