Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Static

The chilling echo of Leo’s trembling voice hung in the frigid air of the grand foyer like a guillotine. Arthur stood completely paralyzed in his soaked trench coat, his knuckles turning porcelain white as he stared at the frozen surveillance monitor.
Evelyn immediately lunged forward, her diamond bracelets clattering violently against the marble balustrade. Her eyes darted with frantic, manic energy as she pointed an accusatory, manicured finger at the bleeding child cradled in Clara’s arms.
“He is hallucinating from the concussion, Arthur, look at the blood on his forehead!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice pitching into an ear-piercing register that betrayed her sheer terror. “The boy hit his skull against the sharp marble stairs, he does not know what he is saying!”
Clara did not flinch, her gaze remaining razor-sharp as she pressed a sterile linen cloth firmly against the gash above Leo’s temple. She felt the boy’s rapid, bird-like heartbeat thumping erratically against her own ribs.
“He knows exactly what he saw, Mrs. Vance,” Clara whispered with venomous precision, never breaking eye contact with the matriarch. “And more importantly, you know why those fifty-two seconds were manually purged from the private server.”
Arthur took three heavy, deliberate steps toward the security console, the heavy soles of his Italian leather shoes echoing like thunderclaps in the cavernous hall. He shoved the panicked head of private security aside and slammed his palms onto the keyboard to inspect the raw hex data.
The metadata logs did not lie. The system override had originated from an internal IP address inside the master bedroom suite exactly four minutes before Leo tumbled down the spiral stairs.
“Lock every iron gate, seal the perimeter exits, and call Dr. Mercer to the private medical wing right now,” Arthur commanded, his deep baritone trembling with restrained fury. “Nobody leaves this estate, not the staff, not the guards, and especially not you, Evelyn.”
Evelyn took a shuddering breath backward, clutching her throat where her diamond choker seemed to suddenly choke her. Her flawless foundation could no longer conceal the ashen grey hue spreading across her cheeks.
Leo tightened his small fingers into the fabric of Clara’s grey uniform, burying his face into her neck as fresh tears tracked through the crimson stains. “Daddy… the man had a silver scorpion tattoo on his wrist… just like the night Mommy went to sleep forever.”

Arthur froze mid-breath, the air turning into shards of glass in his lungs. That single specific detail had never been released to the press or recorded in the official coroner’s report when Nora died two years ago.
The room dropped into an absolute, suffocating void where only the hum of the corrupted server drive remained. A dark, calculated conspiracy had lived under Arthur’s roof, disguised as a tragedy, waiting for the right moment to finish what it started.
