Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the Water

Before Arthur could react, the heavy iron ventilation grate above the vault crashed to the floor with a deafening clang. Dominic Cross dropped down like a predatory panther, his combat knife drawn and dripping with fresh blood from his shoulder wound.
He lunged directly at Arthur, tackling him to the concrete floor before Arthur could bring his firearm to bear. The pistol was knocked out of Arthur’s grip, sliding across the slick floor toward the open elevator shaft.
Dominic pinned Arthur beneath his weight, pressing the razor-sharp blade toward Arthur’s throat with savage strength. “I should have cut your throat the night we ran Nora’s car off the bridge, Vance!”
Clara dropped her blanket, shielding Leo behind an armored cabinet, and charged forward with lethal efficiency. She grabbed an iron crowbar from the emergency wall kit and struck Dominic across his injured shoulder with crushing momentum.
Dominic roared in pain, losing his leverage as Arthur drove a brutal elbow directly into the assassin’s fractured jaw. The two men rolled across the floor, exchanging savage blows amidst the scattered million-dollar bonds.
Evelyn saw her opportunity, snatched the duffel bag, and sprinted toward the private underground escape tunnel leading to the boat dock. “Dominic, kill them both! Meet me at the boat!”
“Evelyn, don’t leave me!” Dominic snarled, struggling against Arthur’s unyielding grip.
Arthur grabbed Dominic by the leather collar and slammed him repeatedly against the reinforced concrete pillar until the assassin’s grip went limp. He pinned the bleeding hitman to the floor, panting heavily, his eyes blazing with fury.

“Clara, stay with Leo and secure this monster,” Arthur ordered, picking up his fallen pistol from the floor. “I am ending this tonight.”
Arthur sprinted into the dark, damp escape tunnel, following the frantic click of Evelyn’s high heels echoing in the distance. The tunnel opened out into the stormy night at the edge of Lake Michigan, where a high-powered speedboat was tied to the rocky private dock.
