Chapter 9 - VANESSA’S RECORDING

Vanessa contacted Elena two weeks later.
Through lawyer.
She had her own recording.
Of Julian.
Elena did not want more drama.
Monica said:
“Listen.”
The audio came from months before.
Julian and Vanessa discussing Caspian.
Julian:
If this fails, Elena’s salons cover the guarantee.
Vanessa:
What if she finds out?
Julian:
She doesn’t even know what EBITDA means.
Elena laughed aloud.
She did.
Of course.
She reviewed salon EBITDA quarterly.
Then:
Vanessa:
What about divorce?
Julian:
She won’t leave. She likes the house too much.
Elena stopped laughing.
There.
He believed comfort was cage.
Then Vanessa asked:
“And if she does?”
Julian:
I’ll show the court she was financially dependent on me.
The irony was almost art.
Her business made three times his salary.
He planned to describe her as dependent.
Why?
Because he never saw accounts.
Never asked.
Never entered salons.
Ignorance became strategy.
Then Vanessa’s attorney offered cooperation.
Why?
Vanessa faced worse exposure on forged documents.
She wanted to show Julian originated scheme.
Both could be guilty differently.
Elena did not negotiate for prosecutors.
She simply provided what she had.
Then divorce discovery revealed Julian had hidden $420,000 in bonuses over three years.
Separate account.
Not necessarily illegal to have account.
But undisclosed marital funds.
That shifted settlement.
Then one more discovery.
Julian had borrowed $70,000 against his retirement to fund Caspian.
He was not wealthy anymore.
The polished executive image was debt.
He had leveraged home.
Retirement.
Marriage.
Everything.
For a venture meant to prove he was bigger than his “little salon wife.”
Meanwhile Clara Institute opened.
First class:
Twenty students.
Ages nineteen to fifty-two.
One former teacher.
One single mother.
One corporate administrator changing careers.
Elena taught business literacy session herself.
First lesson:
Never sign something you did not read.
Students laughed.
She did too.
Then one student raised hand.
“Did someone do that to you?”
Elena paused.
“No.”
Then smiled.
“Someone counted on me doing it.”
Difference.
That night, Elena received bank confirmation.
Her salons were fully released from disputed guarantee pending final settlement.
The house lien challenge also succeeded provisionally.
She should have felt finished.
Instead, Monica called.
“There’s another property.”
“What?”
“Julian bought a condo.”
Elena froze.
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Where?”
Downtown Austin.
Title:
Caspian Medical Distribution.
Occupant?
Vanessa Grant.

Julian had used company loan proceeds to buy his mistress a home.
And collateral for that loan had been Elena’s business.
