Chapter 2 - THE BUSINESS HE CALLED A HOBBY

Julian came upstairs at 8:15.

He stopped when he saw Elena.

Her new haircut was immaculate.

Vanessa appeared behind him.

Her face fell.

“You fixed it.”

Elena smiled.

“I’m a stylist.”

Julian recovered.

“Looks severe.”

“Good.”

He frowned.

She walked past him.

No argument.

At Salon One, her employees stared.

Her manager, Priya, whispered:

“What happened?”

“Personal issue.”

“Do you need anything?”

“Yes.”

Elena paused.

“Pull every vendor contract, lease, line of credit, and bank authorization tied to Evelyn Beauty Holdings.”

Priya’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“I think someone used the company.”

By noon, Elena knew more.

The $850,000 loan had been issued ten months earlier.

Funds did not go to her salons.

They moved to a company called:

Caspian Medical Distribution.

She had never heard of it.

Monica did.

“Pharmaceutical logistics.”

Julian’s industry.

Elena felt cold.

Caspian’s managing member:

Julian Hale.

Forty-nine percent.

Another owner:

Vanessa Grant.

Fifty-one percent.

There it was.

Mistress and husband.

Business partners.

Using Elena’s name as financial protection.

Then Priya found something worse.

The loan application listed Elena’s three salons as projected collateral with combined annual revenue of $1.2 million.

Wrong.

Her actual revenue exceeded $2.8 million.

Why understate it?

Monica answered:

“To make it look like a smaller lifestyle business.”

Exactly how Julian described it.

A hobby.

Cute.

Not serious.

That framing served him.

If the loan failed, he could argue Elena misunderstood business documents.

Maybe careless wife signed something she forgot.

Except Elena was organized.

And the signature was wrong.

Then Monica called a forensic document examiner.

Elena’s genuine signatures from salon leases.

Tax returns.

Vendor agreements.

Compared to the loan.

Preliminary view:

Likely traced.

Then Elena checked where Julian obtained the signature.

One form looked familiar.

Salon Two lease renewal.

Julian had once offered to “drop it at FedEx.”

He had access to the signed original.

That made her stomach turn.

Then Priya asked:

“What happens if the loan defaults?”

Elena read.

Lender could pursue:

Caspian assets.

Then guarantor.

Then business receivables.

Then collateral.

Her salons.

Her house.

Everything Julian mocked was standing beneath his risk.

Then another document surfaced.

Caspian had missed two covenant tests.

Lender had sent a notice.

Deadline:

Five days.

Elena stared.

That was why Julian and Vanessa were celebrating.

Not because of the affair alone.

They expected something to happen in five days.

Then Monica found the final email.

Julian to Vanessa:

Once Elena signs the restructuring acknowledgment Friday, she’s locked in.

Elena had never been asked to sign anything yet.

May you like

Which meant Julian’s real plan had not happened.

Not yet.
