Chapter 7 - THE FIFTH DAY

Five days after Julian cut Elena’s hair, nobody laughed.

The lender suspended enforcement against her pending fraud investigation.

Caspian remained liable.

Julian and Vanessa remained exposed.

Not automatically criminals.

But under scrutiny.

Their attorneys advised silence.

Julian ignored his.

“Elena, please.”

She looked at him.

“You wanted me to sign without reading.”

“I was going to explain.”

“When?”

“After.”

She smiled sadly.

“That word has destroyed more marriages than affairs.”

After the meeting.

After the loan.

After Frankfurt? no, wrong story. Keep.

After she signed.

After his business succeeded.

After Vanessa left.

Always later.

Then lender attorney asked about Julian’s ownership.

He disclosed 49%.

Vanessa 51%.

But corporate records showed a third economic participation agreement.

Ten percent of Vanessa’s profits assigned to a senior executive at Julian’s pharmaceutical company.

Who?

Vanessa went pale.

Julian looked at her.

“You said no one else was involved.”

“I can explain.”

Name:

Martin Crowe.

Julian’s direct supervisor.

Now conflict became corporate.

Caspian had received distribution contracts from Julian’s employer.

Martin had economic interest.

Undisclosed.

Potential kickback issues.

Elena had not known any of that.

Neither apparently had Julian.

Vanessa built her own side arrangement with Martin to secure contracts.

Julian looked devastated.

“You used me.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You used your wife.”

Silence.

Fair.

Then she continued:

“Don’t pretend you’re different because you got cheated too.”

Elena watched.

No pleasure.

Maybe a little.

Then Monica touched her arm.

Time to leave.

Outside, reporters?

None.

Good.

Real life often happens quietly.

Elena went directly to Clara Institute.

Employees gathered.

Priya brought champagne.

Elena refused until closing.

“You look incredible,” one stylist said.

Elena touched her short hair.

For first time, she believed it.

Not because cut was beautiful.

Because it was hers now.

Then Dr. Samantha Price arrived.

She congratulated Elena.

Then hesitated.

“I need to disclose something.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“About Julian?”

“Yes.”

His company had placed him on administrative leave pending investigation of undisclosed ownership in Caspian and related vendor contracts.

No conclusion yet.

Then:

“Martin Crowe resigned this morning.”

Vanessa’s side deal was real enough to scare him.

Samantha looked at Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For laughing once.”

Elena frowned.

Years ago at corporate dinner, Julian joked salon work was not a real career.

Samantha laughed politely.

She remembered.

“I should have said something.”

Elena appreciated that apology more than grand gestures.

Then Samantha said:

“One more thing.”

Caspian had submitted a vendor diversity certification claiming it was partially woman-owned.

Based on Elena’s supposed interest through Evelyn Beauty Holdings.

Her forged company involvement helped them win contracts.

The fraud was larger than the loan.

May you like

Elena’s name had been used as qualification.

And now federal contracting investigators might become involved.
