Chapter 14 - THE LOCK OF HAIR

Elena had kept the lock Julian cut.
For evidence.
Once case ended, Monica returned it.
Plastic evidence bag.
Twelve inches of dark hair.
Elena stared.
“What do I do with this?”
“Your choice.”
She hated that answer.
Which meant it was probably correct.
She considered throwing it away.
Burning?
Too dramatic.
Framing?
Absolutely not.
Then Clara Institute announced first Second Chair graduation.
Twenty-two graduates.
Nina among them.
Now assistant operations manager.
At ceremony, Elena brought bag.
Not publicly.
After event, she walked into training salon.
Empty.
Placed hair on counter.
Clara happened to enter.
“What’s that?”
“The cut.”
Clara understood immediately.
Elena opened bag.
Hair still glossy.
Dead material.
Nothing mystical.
She expected emotion.
Instead:
Nothing.
The power was gone.
She picked up scissors.
Cut lock into tiny pieces.
Swept them into trash.
Clara watched.
“That’s all?”
“That’s all.”
Beautiful.
Then Thomas arrived to take her to dinner.
He noticed broom.
“Do I ask?”
“No.”
“Excellent.”
Learning.
Dinner lasted three hours.
Months later, Thomas said he loved her.
Elena did not say it immediately.
He accepted.
Two months later, she did.
No urgency.
No rescue.
Then Clara Institute received major expansion offer.
Investor group wanted ten locations.
Huge capital.
Loss of control.
Elena reviewed.
Old version might have been tempted to prove scale.
New version asked:
Do I want this?
Answer:
Not that fast.
She declined.
Investor stunned.
“You could be national.”
“I could also hate my life.”
Good point.
Instead, Elena opened second institute in San Antonio with employee ownership component.
Growth on her terms.
Then one evening Julian emailed.
Attachment:
Old photograph from their wedding.
Elena almost rolled eyes.
Message:
Found this while moving. You looked happy. I’m sorry I didn’t protect that.
She replied:
I was happy then. That doesn’t mean ending was wrong.
He answered:
I know.
No reopening.
Just history.
Then Elena looked at herself in mirror.
Hair now brushing shoulders.
She considered growing it long again.
Then smiled.
Called Priya.
“Cut tomorrow.”
“How short?”
“Bob.”
Still.
Not because Julian took long hair.
May you like
Because Elena liked short.
Choice changed meaning.
